or should they purchase it for you before you leave. I'm reviewing some contracts and they say they'll reimburse you once you arrive but is this normal...how do you trust that.??

For a public school it it standard and there are no worries about being left at the airport and told there is no job.

I would NOT do it for a hagwan - too many horror stories.
That said, there are some who do without problems but I still wouldn't.

I have a question in the same vein....

We are coming with two children. Based on what we are seeing with flights, with 1.3m x 2 we should be able to cover maybe three out of the 4 tickets. However, I am just curious, do they just give 1.3m or do they only reimburse for the face value of the ticket up to 1.3?

1.3 regardless of ticket cost.

If it's a hogwon, definitely don't buy your own ticket. If they don't give you a round trip ticket, don't accept the job. Plenty of other places WILL give you a round trip ticket. Without it, there's nothing keeping the school from ditching you at the last minute because they found someone else, or from firing you after a couple months. Sure, one day they might unexpectedly fire you on the spot anyway but at least in that situation you have a way back home.

Public school - depends on what your contract says and this year there ARE differences (depending on which version your school used or if you used the current EPIK/GEPIK contract (and even then there are minor differences).

If it says they give you 1.3 then you get 1.3.
If they say reimbursement then you get the receipt value.

Good hogwans and public schools do not prepay airfare. You should not expect your airfare to be prepaid. You should be reimbursed within your first week on the job.

There have been too many cases of dishonest teachers taking the airfare and not showing up, or hopping off in Japan and using the prepaid airfare as a free ride.

Dishonest teachers who failed to pay their bills, due to runners or just leaving without paying, caused greater restrictions in the provision of utilites and cell phones to foreigners.

Pubic schools and many hogwans withhold large housing deposits due to damages and dishonesty by teachers.

Teachers whining about the legal 30% reduction in pension contributions due to the 30% exclusion caused the 30% income exclusion for foreign workers to be repealed. This has resulted in a large increase in income taxes paid by all.

Two or three incidents involving teachers and young children caused the much more restrictive and difficult visa paperwork process that affects us all - and ironically, the changes would not have kept any of the offenders out if the changes had been in effect at the time they came.

Recent changes in the visa process are likely to result in changes to the airfare system. Over time we will likely see a change to reimbursement following 6 months employment or possibly no airfare provided at all.

All it takes is a few rotten apples.

Yes, Koreans are in no way whatsoever responsible for their own actions and overreactions towards NETs, ontheway.
