Just to clarify.....
An online M.A will NOT be accepted in the Middle East.
Seriously, I see no value at all in doing an M.A at a Korean University. If you're going to another country to teach esl or you're going back home, you WILL ALWAYS be worried if your Korean qualification will be recognized/taken seriously/looked down upon (very likely). Heck as mentioned, it will even be looked down by some hiring committees (Koreans and Westerners), in Korea.
On the other side of the coin, YOU CAN do an M.A here in Korea (on-site), from an accredited Western University. Western qualifications are recognized WORLDWIDE as being the best in the world. Once you have that piece of paper, nobody can take it away from you and you will have ALL the options open to you. |

Could you please direct me to some links/names of these Western MAs you are talking about that can be done in Korea, can't find them. Thanks |

Hi Poker. Check out this thread....... http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=105356
Should have what you're looking for.
Framingham State University (recently upgraded from college to university), is what I would be looking at if I was you. US profs are flown to Jochiwon over several different periods throughout the course of the program. Classes are held in (intensive) blocks................. |

Very good points Bobbybigfoot. However, if the OP doesn't mind, I'd like to pose my own question:
What if I already have a very good master's degree with thesis, from a top university in another field, but want a second master's degree for an ESL qualification? It is already obvious form my prior degrees that I am educated, but I want that specific credential to teach ESL.
If it is an add-on, is online (with a thesis) more acceptable? |
In your case, I don't think it matters. You will already be able to demonstrate to employers your commitment to education.
In fact, I'd hazard a guess that your existing MA is probably sufficient enough to most, if not all, universities here in Korea. But I'm reaching here on this assumption.
Other people should weigh in on this subject though. |

Yes, the world is your oyster with a degree from Framington State- just upgraded from college to university! Not knocking Framington State, but seriously, the advice some people give on this site truly needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Is this really true? I've been employed for so long I might be out of the loop, but a quick browse of some of the international job board's Middle East announcements makes no mention of on-line or not. I know of people getting jobs in UAE with U of Birmingham distance degrees.

Ok, I guess we all are entitled to an opinion. Would like to hear more about your experience in the matter. |

Hapki, are you really THAT stupid that you didn't understand my post? You are obviously mentally challenged, so let me explain to you.....
Framingham State University, is it a top uni? No.
Framingham State University, is it a university based in one of the big seven countries? Yes.
Framingham State University, will you be undertaking an online M.A?No. It's done on campus in Korea.
Framingham State University, will it trump ANY qualification from a Korean University, when it comes to working in esl in ANY country? Yes.
Will an M.A from a middle to lower ranking western university get you a job working at a top TEN university in Korea? Absolutely yes.
Will having an M.A from Framingham (or any western university), be looked at more favorably by most Western/Asian employers than an equivalent Korean qualification? Yes.

*IF* your employer checks and finds out (especially at the better working establishments), that your degree has been awarded from working online, you will NOT be hired or you will be fired if they check later on.....
I know of two individuals who have experienced this firsthand.
You sir are a clown and it's idiots like you that have made some of the more informative posters decide to stop posting here. |

Referring to somebody as mentally challenged is a step too far don't you think?
I've met hapki and he's a good guy. |

I'm well aware of Framington's set-up. One of their 2 week sessions is actually taking place right now down in Jochiwon. I have a good friend taking it. You are arguing with yourself on this point.

PROVE IT! When I see posters like this claiming opinion as fact, I call them on it. People from Mass. haven't even heard of Framington. Like I said, I'm not knocking the school, I just don't like your preachy opinion-as-fact attitude, especially when you don't support your claim with any facts or conclusive evidence.

Of course, so what? What's your point? You're arguing with yourself again.

Again, prove it. Unless you are on the hiring committee of every single ESL job available, you aren't doing nothing but blowing smoke. YOU HAVE NO CONTENT.
You show you have no ability to see other's opinions. And the name calling- really classy. I know several of the long-timers on this thread, and our experiences contrast your opinions. That's what I am saying. |

No (god you're dumb), this is info being put out there for other posters and readers, not just YOU. Got it?

Seriously, either you CAN'T READ or you didn't read the rest of the thread. What part of..... KOREAN IMMIGRATION will NOT grant work visas to instructors with degrees from OUTSIDE of US, Canada, Ireland, England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa. Hardly a glowing endorsement is it, that Korean immigration don't even recognize/rate qualifications from KOREAN Universities!
If you seriously believe that having a degree from a country not using English as L1 is the equivalent to having a degree from a country using English as L1.....with regard to applying for jobs to teach English!...I'll call the nurse for you right now.

This is (again) not just for your benefit dummy..........it's for others out there who would worry about undertaking a graduate degree from a not so top tier (western university). Understand?

As I already told you, the hiring committees I have been part of, would automatically put an applicant's application in the trash can if their qualifications were not awarded from one of the big seven western universities.
Sure that might be only two committees.......BUT it's just my own personal experience and it does show that not having WESTERN qualifications IS, HAS BEEN and WILL be a disadvantage at least some of the time. |
