Seeing as the vast majority of downloaders don't watch UK TV shows I would say that yes, they are obscure.

Since the tracker, which is only UK TV shows, has almost 100,000 users, and is ridiculously active, no, I wouldn't really call it obscure. A fair number of british shows regularly find there way to the regularly mainstream commercial trackers, but the bulk of it doesn't. If those shows are popular enough to get spread there, I would say that UK TV shows in general have an appeal far beyond obscure, say Doctor Who.
You do realize that is a UK TV show right?

Doctor Who is all over public trackers. As are other popular British shows. The obscure ones aren't.

Casualty has been on the air for 25 years, and it's so popular they moved it from 12 weeks a year to 48 weeks a year.
It's nowhere to be found on public trackers. Most recently it won Best continuing drama from the BATAs in 2007 and it's nominated again this year. Nothing remotely obscure about it.

Not obscure in the UK does not mean it's not obscure outside the UK. I've never heard of it. Hard to find = obscure. Not well known outside the country it airs = obscure.

Anyway, this is becoming a pointless argument. I guess all I was trying to say is that I agree with whoever said that for if you're not after obscure shows, then anything you need will be on public trackers.

That's a rather circular argument. It's obscure because it's hard to find and it's hard to find because it's obscure.
Very popular stuff from many genres is easy to find, especially current stuff. You want to explore any of those genres deeper, or go after something a little older, you probably need a private tracker.

i always thought most stuff that 99% of downloaders want is freely available on public torrent sites.

id like to understand, besides obscure stuff, what are the advantages of going private? are download speeds that much better? i never noticed this with demonoid. maybe theyre just good for hardcore/obscure downloaders but a casual downloader wont really see benefits.

Demonoid is not really a private tracker. On most private trackers I've been on, download speed is insane and it's a problem. People leechers get the file so fast it takes you ages to get your ratio back unless you happened to be on the file the second it was added.

private sites usually have reseed and request areas to help you find other stuff as well. I'd say public trackers cover less than 50% of the material out there. Probably much less.

I'd like to get into private trackers again. I was on blackcats-games for awhile and liked the availability of ps2 games. I always have a good ratio since I leave my computer on for weeks at a time. Right now I'd probably be looking more for tv shows and movies, but I'm not really up to date on the new trackers. If anyone has an invite to help get me started, I'd appreciate it.

I get all of my stuff from the public trackers BTJunkie or Isohunt. I rarely need to use Demonoid.

Also, for sports, try sportstorrent.com. HOF Torrents is good too but is invite based with a few open registration periods. Basically the same stuff as sportstorrent.

For footy, fbtz.com has everything.

For live sports, myp2p.eu does the trick since ADTHE and Channelsurfing were seized.

I've been trying to find a spot with NCAA college basketball. ESPN3 can't be accessed overseas.

^^
To get ESPN, have you tried a proxy such as Hotspot Shield??

Regarding private trackers...I don't get the hype. I rarely use the two that I'm a member of, except to keep my membership going.
I get everything I need from Demonoid and other public rackers, without the hassle of a ratio. Even the things exclusively available on private trackers are of no use to me, and big deal if I get free material in 10 seconds, or 10 hours.

Having said that, if anyone wants an invite to AudioZoneTorrents.com, i'd be interested in a trade for something interesting that doesn't require much stress to keep up with. Might come in handy some day.

I don't get the private tracker thing.

Again it all depends on what you want. I collect Korean movies, a lot of which I watch, but a lot of which are still in my to watch pile. There is a lot that doesn't make it to public trackers. Or if they do, they don't last long. Also on private trackers you have a better chance of finding rare or older movies. There are a couple trackers that specialize in very rare or movies from countries which normally might not make it to public trackers. If you're seriously into things like music and movies beyond casual viewing/watching they might benefit you.

For me, HDBits, the only private tracker I'm still on, is just better quality stuff. Bare minimum is 720p, most new stuff is done in 1080p w/ Dolby 5.1 and then reencoded down in 1080i and 720p. Everything looks fantastic hooked up to the big screen via hdmi or streamed through router to the ps3. Yes, there are HD files everywhere out there, but only there can I always get a perfect file, automatically DLed via RSS within minutes of a show airing back home, and an amazing international movie selection with enthusiasts encoding and uploading subs from around the world. I use it like a DVR. I have more shows than I can watch most of the time, and have no ratio problems because everything is instantly downloaded.

The community is nitpicky as all hell about every little detail about the files, so if the audio or subtitles are off by .5 second, or if the video is noticeably lower quality than source, it's redone by someone else on the site. The ratio is also easy to keep up because of the bonuses for leaving things seeding.

Once you're in on a private tracker that works for you, you never want to go back (until a site like OINK gets shut down... then you go back to Soulseek).

Has anyone gotten hotspot or any other proxies to work on ESPN3? That'd be solid!! Also, I don't want to download Sportscenter every day, I just want to find a place to stream it occasionally, since channelsurfing.net was shut down. Anything similar?

I've never been able to get ESPN3 to work with HotSpot Shield. I think the issue is that ESPN3 works with only certain providers, so unless the VPN is through them it doesn't matter. Some universities let students VPN into their network, maybe your alma mater does?

100% agreed on the private torrent sites, for the same reasons.
