People have talked about ^^ vs. : ) before somewhere else, they mentioned westerners and Asians pay different attention to different parts of the face more. eyes are believed to be the windows of the heart (In China), and convey lots of information. Westerners think a big smile comes out from the mouth.

btw, I love to put ~ in the end of my sentenses (e.g I went skiing yesterday, I crawled to my office this morning~!) , I feel that makes my sentenses funnier, but who cares. many Koreans just get used to put ^^ behind everything they type.

My dog died ^^. I broke up with my bf last night ^^. I got swine flu ^^.

ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
kkkkkk

I actually *love* K-emotocons! ^^*

It's so cute when friends add ^^ to every msg, especially if they're grown men... ㅋㅋㅋ

It's too bad you don't like it. ㅠㅠ

I began to use the ^^ in student notes after seeing their parents use it a lot. It started as a mimic (Don't you all mimic the movements or mannerisms of people you want to be liked by? I do!) But now it is a habit.

I like that it is just the eyes. I smile more with my eyes than my lips anyway. gegege ^^

i always take the '~' to mean something like an open ended smile substitute. that doesn't make any sense. i'll get texts with it and they're
'we should meet for dinner~'
'i had fun, lets do it again~'
thats how i figure it anyway.
the '^^' i actually use. hated using faces back home, and it did take me a while to work out that it wasn't referring to carrots.

~ at the end of the sentence is more like a light-hearted/relaxing intonation.

when i switch my phone to hangul mode for typing, the lone non-hangul character is ^, for quick and easy ^^ access. I'm surprised they didn't choose ~ instead.

there is a new ad on the subway and it uses emoticons to demonstrate before and after pictures for plastic surgeries ....its hilarious!!

I personally am a big fan of the "^^"

^^
Its like the "hello kitty" of the emoticon....the eyes are smiling or can convey any emotion depending on the context of the text

LOL I took a picture of that ad!

The best plastic surgery slogan still belongs to "Face is not flat." Razz
