Quote:
have been 'multiple fatalities' after a shallow 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Christchurch this afternoon caused buildings to collapse, police have confirmed.

Police said fatalities had been reported at several locations and that two buses had been crushed by falling buildings.

Christchurch resident Jane Smith, who works in the central city, told the Herald a work colleague had just returned from helping rescue efforts after a building facade had collapsed on a bus on Colombo St.

"There's people dead. He was pulling them out of a bus. Colombo St is completely munted."

Police said there were reports of fires in buildings in the central city and of people being trapped.

Wow. A lot of them were still cleaning up from the last one. I hope not too many people died.

I tried following the Wiki links re the 30 deaths to the original source:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/4688231/Deaths-destruction-in-Christchurch-quake

"Pyne Gould Corporation has confirmed that staff from the building are missing, but would not say how many. The company was working to account for each staff member.

At the building's cordon, Labour Party leader Phil Goff said at least 30 people were feared trapped inside and at least one person was killed. Families were congregating at the cordon, he said."

There's supposed to be approx 100 trapped, though they aren't setting exact numbers as of yet.

Keith Rudd made some good points about Australias support in this matter. The Australian TV channel I watch on Gyeonggi-do tv, the one before CCTV was showing TV3 NZ for all the coverage and I thought that was good.

Though he also mentioned that approx 8000 Australians are in the region, so I can see why he would be concerned too.

Yes, it's been fun. I was in the city (seated in the Town Hall) when it happened. Lots of fun and excitement and a long walk out of town as everyone tried to get away from the city.

We just had another three aftershocks in the last 5 or 10 minutes and one felt like it might have been maybe a 5.0.

75 dead so far and more expected. A very sad day.
