I am planning to fly to Seoul from China on a one-way ticket. Does anyone know whether a Canadian passport holder is allowed to enter Korea without a return ticket to China or an advance ticket to Canada? Thanks. Cool

Immigration rules for visa waiver privileges state that you are required to have onward passage out of Korea.

IF you are refused entry it is the air carrier who gets fined AND bears the cost of your removal. For that reason it is usually the air carrier who will give you grief if you try to fly in on a one-way ticket.

Have people done it = yes.
Have people had problems = yes.
Have people had to buy additional tickets before they were allowed to board the aircraft = yes.
Does it happen to everyone = NO.

Just be prepared with a reason (taking the ferry to Japan, etc.) when you get to the check-in counter or be prepared to buy a (refundable) ticket out of Korea while you are at the airport in China in case it is required when you attempt to check-in and get your boarding pass.

I agree with ttompatz 100% but i've got a quick anecdote for you.

Friend of mine came across by ferry from China. When he got to port, they didn't have anyone there who spoke any English (not a lot of English speaking foreigners come in on 1 way tickets from China on the ferry) and when they realized that they couldn't really talk with him, they just let him in.

Two caveats - 1, he'd been traveling the world for 2 years at that point and had a passport as thick as a bible with visas, and 2. he's half japanese. So he had a record of entering and exiting countries with no problem, and he said that he frequently got sympathetic treatment for being half asian.

Anyway, just tossing that out there, for what it's worth.

Thanks for your replies. What I'm going to do is buy a refundable return ticket at Beijing airport if I'm denied clearance with my one-way ticket. Cool

Maybe buy a one way ferry ticket from Busan to fukuoka. It is mostly refundable.

Here's one to add to the list of potential problems for future references.

I purchased a refundable onward ticket to Japan knowing full well i was going to stay in Korea and change status from tourist to F2 (my wife flew over a couple of weeks before I did) I was bringing our 1 year old along with me, at the airline counter my Japan ticket was basically worthless to them, and they required me to purchase a return ticket for my son. They told me "It's considered a form of immigration" I even explained i was coming to live here and my situation but was still required to purchase a return ticket for my son. It was a frustrating day at the airport for me.

I came on a one way from Taipei and argued with them for awhile, claiming I was taking the ferry to Japan and to look at all the stamps in my passport. They let me on, Incheon immigration let me through. Anecdotal, but take it for what you will.

My friend is thinking of spending some time in Korea, but doesn't want to apply for a Visa - Can he just hop back and forth between Japan and Korea freely?

Yes, with the proviso that they have onward or return passage out of each country as they enter (visa waiver requirement).
