Hey everyone,
I am currently seeking jobs in Seoul and am going through the procedure of obtaining my criminal record check. The only problem is that I'm pretty sure I have a caution (as opposed to a conviction) for "assault with a dangerous weapon" on there and basically, my question is how much will this hamper my job hunt? Is it best if I lower my expectations?

Thanks to anyone who offers genuine advice but if your just here to tell me I'm an idiot, please don't bother, the circumstances of the incident are far too complicated to go into.

For an E2 visa you have absolutely 0% chance of getting approved by immigration, thus no work.

Can you explain your visa status more? If your an F visa holder you might have a chance to work for a private school.

thanks for the reply Riker, I only wish you had better news for me. Unfortunately I am not an F visa holder so it looks like curtains for my korean hopes. Do you know if there are ways around the issue? Failing that, can you advise of any other locations which may be more lenient? I hoping to save some money so anywhere that could offer a good wage in relation to cost of living would be preferable. I am going to try and expunge my record but I am not holding out much hope.

Well if your from the US, since there is no conviction you may possibly get it expunged / removed but it will likely take a few weeks and I'm assuming paying a lawyer a lot of money.

This is assuming a judge will agree to do this.

China is always an option.

What is a "caution?" In all my years in the US, I have never heard of such a thing.

If you explain what exactly you did we might be able to answer clearly. How do you get a caution for "assault with a deadly weapon"? What was the circumstance?

a caution is an admission of guilt, therefore making it unnecessary to go through the court system. At the time, it was suggested to me that this was the easiest way to get the whole issue to go away. I signed the statement purely because I thought he would have very few consequences in the future. I had no idea at that stage I was going to try teaching in Korea. The worst thing is, I would have argued my case had I been considering career path, particularly because I never considered it to be my fault anyway. The circumstances:I was waiting for a taxi, drinking a bottle of beer. A drunk guy came past and started an argument with me, an argument which resulted in him having his hands around my neck strangling me. I was reluctant to hit him with the bottle but he wouldn't let go and eventually I had no choice. The drunk guy got arrested too hence the police offered me a caution as opposed to convicting me. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I live in Northern Ireland, UK if anyone has any details about this

Here's an old thread....

It's possible with a misdemeanor, but I'm not too sure about something like assault. That just sounds bad.

I'm can't wait for marsavalanche to jump into this conversation.

I don't think they want anyone with a record because there's so many to select from.

http://www.disclosurescotland.co.uk/what-is-disclosure/

The UK-wide Basic Disclosure from there doesn't seem to show cautions.

The Basic Disclosure is the one the Korean Immigration office wants.

Problem solved?

Get a Basic Disclosure and see if it turns up clean.

EDIT: Further to the above, I just had a look around the info pages, Disclosure Scotland issue the Basic Disclosure to anyone anywhere in the UK for personal purposes, you only need a NI Access CRC if you're going to use it for a position in N. Ireland. A Basic Disclosure from Disclosure Scotland shouldn't show your caution.

May I recommend Saudi Arabia!?!? Or Egypt perhaps?

They are very aggressive societies, therefore this may be an advantage with your background.... :/
