i've read through the few posts that are kicking around on here, but i was wondering if anyone had any more up to date info..

in the market for a mid-range decent DSLR, i'd imagine canon or nikon.
i had nikon kit before and was impressed, but it all depends on the price discrepancies [if any] when moving up to what i imagine will be the 5DmkII kinda level..
i know yongsan, and i've done the rounds. got your usual blokes who just want to shift gear all the way to the blokes who happily just shoot the breeze with you for 45 minutes about life and everything in between.
the prices seemed reasonable.
but from someone i met last weekend, they seemed to believe that a steal would be found in namsan. i've not been, wouldn't know where to start with that one

so, i have no idea.
i'm just wondering if anyone has bought one recently, and if so, did you get a sweet deal / bundle, where from, all the rest of it

cheers

I have a friend that got his Canon 450D in Namsan. He told me that was 'the' place to go and negotiate, negotiate, negotiate for a bargain.

I got mine (same model) at ETLand in Daehwa. A little bit pricier, but then again I know if there is a problem with the camera they will help me sort it out.

Avoid Yongsan. I wouldn't wipe my @$$ there as they'd charge for tp

Canon 60D is a good mid/pre-professional model.

The new D7000 is a great midlevel camera if you're going with Nikon

I got the Nikon D7000. It's a great camera in every aspect (in my opinion).
I bought it in Namdaemun for 1.35 million.

Go to DPreview.com and read the reviews and then check the prices on danawa.co.kr for what you want.

In September I bought a Canon 550D, but I got the gray market which has a different name (Kiss X4) as it was significantly cheaper and the shop said they would provide 1 year warranty personally.

Have been very happy with it so far.

Just this week Canon announced it's successor the Kiss X5/T3i which is essentially the same camera but with enhanced features for HD video and a movable LCD screen. No prices yet, but when it comes out the camera I have will probably drop in price and be an even better deal.

Just bought a 5D mk II for 2.8mil brand new in Namdaemun.
They also had 'refurbished' as new 7D's going for as low as 1.5mil...

Good luck

dSLRs are expensive anywhere in Korea. the best bet would be to buy it off from someone or possibly order from the overseas.

depending on the brand you get, it might be even cheaper to ship it priority from the US than it is to buy it here.

one good shop I used in the past is www.adorama.com
they have good deals on cameras and lots of choice too

for first camera, I would stick with either 450d or even an earlier (cheaper) 400d model. I myself have a 350d and even though I stopped using it, it still does a lot more than I will ever need.

good resolution, great size and amazing quality/hardiness.

don't get anything more expensive if all you want is quality pictures.

anything else would only be useful for a photo professional, i.e. someone who knows what he's doing and will be doing it their whole life

But spending a bit more money means bigger viewfinders and other nice features. The best thing to do is to go into a shop and see which one feels good in your hands (insert sarcasm).

I recommend that you go to a PixDix store. They usually have all the Nikons, Canons and others, or maybe even a large Homeplus or Emart.
But don't buy from PixDix, they are too frigging expensive.

I only bought the D7000 body (I have lenses).

Wouldn't you get hit with the import duty, though?

Yes, but a lot of the times, it's still cheaper. Two years ago, I bought a D700 off from Androma via eBay. Having it shipped, insured and a 200,000W import duty, I still ended up saving about $700 than if I bought in Korea

What makes it a grey market camera? Is the Kiss X4 from China? I looked on Gmarket and they are significantly cheaper than the 550d. Are they the same camera? Any drawbacks to buying the kiss X4?

Thanks
