I was really lucky with my first job here, so now I'm into my second year, and will probably re-sign for a third.

The downside is that I would love to be in Seoul or Busan. Its okay here, but I'm not in love with Daegu. The bullet train should help- I'll be popping up to Seoul for the ladies lunch on Saturday. My social life here sucks, because I don't go partying on weekends, and my colleagues are younger than me, or married. I'd be more likely to meet people more like me in a bigger city.

As for longterm people being terminated, I don't doubt that it happens, but that is not what happened here. In a couple of programs, we lost maybe eight people this year. Only one had been here a long time, and letting that person go seemed justified to everyone. I only had a small doubt about one of the others, but it was in a program that was cutting back, so the terminations were necessary.

No, I don't always feel treated completely 100% fairly, but, honestly, I have never felt that anyplace I was an employee, there are always some "issues." But, in general, I feel respected and well-treated. I have a tremendous amount of autonomy with my work, and that is crucial for me.

I wish that I could move around a bit, like others have, but this is too good for now, and I'm just going to have to make good use of the train!

Schwa, do you speak Korean?

I'm ashamed at how poorly, but I try. Why do you ask?

Sometimes I am envious of those with higher salaries, and try to make myself feel better by telling myself, "They get paid more, so they must speak Korean -- maybe that's why."

Even though we've had some differences in the past, if I was in Korea, I'd see you there. It's a shame... Confused

Personal experience, eh?

That's why I'm leaving this year... The longer you stay here the more unemployable you become back home...

Depends what you are supposed to be employable for.

I think anyone can do this job for a while. A while may be only a few months or less than a year though. Don't a lot of people not complete a full year in Korea? My co-worker, a fellow 30-something white Can-american dude, was joking with me about how he figures the boss would rather have some younger, cuter and female teachers. I said perhaps but I sure wouldn't bank on them hanging out too long in the boonies like we are.
