I work at an after school program but the company will try to low-ball you with salary. If they do, then you will either have to negotiate for more pay or less work hour. I chose shorter working time so that I can work elsewhere. I only chose to work an After school program because it gives me a lot of time to do other things. Occasionally, you will see other companies that hire gyopos but it is usually within outskirts of Seoul. Most Korean parents want to see E-2 visa holders of western heritage. It sucks but that is the reality. But don't lose hope. Good luck. Try Daekkyo. They are pretty big for after school programs. |

Ethnic Koreans. We have a different visa class. There's no difference between E-2s and F-4s, except that F-4s (Gyopos) don't have to renew our visa's every year, and our visa isn't tied to our job. We don't need sponsors.
In terms of hiring, gyopos have it a lot harder to find jobs because of the "Pretty white face" mentality. A lot of job advertisements will explicitly say E-2s only which means "We want white people" or "No Gyopos". Unless your completely bilingual and have a very wide social network, and a degree from an ivy league. Its very, very, very hard to get gyopo only positions that usually pay double what E-2s get. On top of that, a lot of jobs usually the farther you get from Seoul pay different wages for an E-2 (Assumedly white) and an F-4. The biggest pay difference I've seen so far is 500,000 less a month for the same hours, same work. F-2 visas are a little different. They're foreigners that married Korean citizens. A lot of jobs target them too. Usually It'll say F-2s, E-2s wanted, no F-4s or Gyopos
And on the social level, after you get the job. F-4 males are discriminated against because we don't have to serve in the military. Conscription is a big and sensitive thing in Korea. There's some deep resentment and jealousy even though Koreans fully recognize that we carry different passports. A little more than half of the corporate business english jobs I've looked at say they want a gyopo female. Of course they could want one for a lot of reasons but IMO, this has something to do with it. |

I wouldn't let a male gyopo work for a public school. The South Korean government isn't hiring fresh new teachers that often. And too many public schools are hiring K-women for full-time teaching positions. Naturally they would rather want a female gyopo to teach English.
That's it. Education is now a feminized job sector in South Korea. |
