Drinking diet soda is associated with a 50-percent increase in stroke risk, according to a study presented earlier this month at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles.

the study is not strong on proving the relationship. it did not control for the health of the food they ate, only calories. people who drink soda are known to have worse diets.

Where did you find the study?

The article linked does not really give much information on it.

Aspartame in particular has a questionable background. It required an intense lobby and fraud to pass tests to make it suitable for human consumption.

Granted the test amounts were well above what you find in a soda.

Probably better off getting sodas with xylitol, erythritol, or stevia.

I searched on google and found a NY Times article which analysed the methodology of this study.

Wow!

I mean I don't drink normal Coke so if I do drink coke it is Coke Zero or Pepsi Max. Though I think I am lucky as I don't consume much of the stuff and am not addicted to sugar drinks either. I mean if I have coffee I never add sugar.

As a teenager I think I loved sugar drinks but once you go at least 1 month without them it is easy not to miss them. Also I don't know about other people but the less sugar drinks you have it seems the better water tastes. I love water and I don't drink sugar loaded drinks. Anyone else find this?

I drink about 1 caffeine free coke every 2 weeks. Any more than that and I start feeling bad.

Aspartame makes me feel terrible and I try to never ever drink it. The only artificial sweeteners I can drink are splenda and sweet'n low. But I still try to avoid them.
