| Yes, she is a Buckeye. No, I will not send her to anyone's apartment. I have recommended that she try to get a public school position. I'm the only foreign teachear at a public high school, so I can't get her a job here. I'm not sure that I would ever want to work at a hagwon ever again, but if I did I'd go to one of the larger chains known for working with adults. A few of my friends have had good experiences at Pagoda and Avalon and one is a manager at JLS. I think that if she goe to one these she will be alright. Correct me if I'm wrong. |

Honestly, if I was black, I wouldn't set my sights on Korea. Yes, it's horrible to say things like this. No it doesn't make it less true. Every black person I've known who has come to Korea has had a really, really hard time. The social stratification is just too weighed against them. God, you even see things on TV where people are still doing black face and eating watermelon like some kind of Al Jolson routine. Truly nightmarish. I would go for somewhere more accepting of foreigners, like Thailand or the Philippines.
Also, remember that chain adult hagwon positions are hard as hell to get as it is, and they're almost always split shifts, which will drain the soul out of her should she find an employer not racist enough to hire her.
What a god-awful industry. |

All the blacks folks I know here love it or have an awesome time. They pretty involved in social scene here too.
I'm black and while the job market got harder(especially last yet), it picked up heavily this march and thanks to the FBI checks. I had a 90% of the positions I've applied to ask for a interview recently...in Seoul.
Of my friends in korea who've stayed the longest: black guys and married white dudes.
Koreans generally save their hatred towards much more common targets:
Chinese immigrants, Pakistanis(and those confused with them), and any 3D workers. Go ask them about discrimination and they'll talk your damn ear off for hours about the level of crap they get.
As for adult hagwons, I've had interviews or interview offers at every single major chain for adults....only one was racist...foreigners usually make the hiring decisions at these places or are involved. It's not just a bunch of adjoessi picking the most handsome white dude.
There is racism in the industry, but it's nothing like White =good Black = bad |

You're just asking for a bunch of whiny white guys to come on here and tell you that you're wrong because Koreans are all so racist. Apparently they know what it's like living in Korea as a black man more than you. |
