External factors can increase said "internal suckiness" greatly. |

| How could the UK be so bad? You've got a mix of people, great beer, pub food, and Europe a stone's throw away. I guess there is what you see and how you live, but still... |

Jeong is a Chinese character, so Japanese have it (called Jo), and Koreans, and Chinese. We also have it. It just means we understand people from our own backgrounds/countries. Americans get understand Americans, the English can understand other English, Koreans understand Koreans. Probably Bak Chung Hee told them it was theirs to stop fighting with each other (it didnt work...) |

Its funny but the ol' "Only losers leave their home country and take up esl" refrain has never really rung true to my ears.
I kind of regard it as being the other way round.

I had this feeling for a long time when I came back from Taipei 1 year ago.
The only thing to change this feeling is spice it up a bit. I am just finishing my contract this month before I head to SK but to cope I moved into a riverside apartment with some cool flatmates nice view and right near the best places in the centre of the city for the last 4 mths.
If I hadn't done that and stayed in the suburbs I probably would have killed myself from the boredom and isolation.
Worse thing you could do though is get a job in the UK. I don't know if where you live is the same but in Brisbane the typical job finishes at 5pm yet the typical shop also closes at 5pm. WTF! HONESTLY how dumb can a shop be, people who work a stable 9-5 job have the cash to spend so why not open shops late. Also only a few coffee shops open late near me and I am in the centre of town and bars are only populated on the weekends. Yet I live in a city of 2 million people.......
There is no life here if youre used to big urban places packed with people! |

The Golden Rule for 1st timers to esl in Korea is beautiful in it's simplicitly and is likely thus one to heed with earnest
Livewire says "Do not thou goest back home to the chosen land until thou hast a clear idea of the career or post grad studies thou wantest to do there and enough money saved to do it. Otherwisest thoust will experiencest post korea decompression - a huge comedown and sense of frustration and boredom after the roller coaster ride and hieghtened lifestyle you had in korea."
Livewire go now, eat choco pie, drink coffee. |

Let's examine the character in question (情 I believe) and it's primary meanings:
1: 뜻 (meaning).
2: 마음의 작용 (heart's operation).
3: 사랑 (love).
4: 인정 (human feelings).
5: 본성 (true character).
6: 정성 (sincerity and earnestness).
we see nothing about nationality or ethnicity. It's not about Koreans understanding Koreans or Americans understanding Americans, it's about a certain quality of human emotion and character with regards to one's social bonds. If properly understood, any human can have (or lack) 정. Koreans are willfully misunderstanding (or even perverting) this concept when they say only Koreans can have 정. In fact, such an assertion essentially pisses all over the concept, since it takes a noble and universal concept and subordinates it to petty nationalism and ethnocentricism. Cultural barriers might at times get in the way of the perception of 정 in others or prevent it from developing due to frustrations or inability to communicate, but they don't erradicate it or make it impossible. |

Those people tend to travel though, yes? Not just stagnate in one small town for life. |

I don't know if ESL has the most creative people working in it but I think it's pretty much cornered the market on narcissistic, condescending muleholes. |
