|

Hey folks,
I'm renting a car on Thursday and driving Seoul --> Gwangju (down south) return. For what I have to do, it's the most economical method. I'm an experienced driver back home, but I have 0 experience driving in Korea. If anyone has experience with this trip, I would appreciate some help...
(1) How much does gas cost (it's about 600km)?
(2) How much are the tolls?
(3) What are my chances of survival with a Korean navigation system (Avis has no English ones (!?)
Any input greatly appreciated! |

Freeways are good and roadsigns are bilingual or universal.
Getting there is easy.
Getting around AFTER you get there is the hardest part (phoning for local directions is easiest).

Thanks ttompatz. Ill make sure I have numbers of people I can call.
PS: You must have replied to my clueless posts a dozen times now! Thanks for your help, and Id be only too happy to buy you a beer the next time youre in Gangnam!
If any others have experience with long-distance driving in Korea, Id love some more input. How about fuel costs? What can I expect to pay at a toll, and roughly how many will I run into between Gwangju and Seoul? |

Depending on what kind of car you've rented, you're looking at 50-70k won to fill up your tank from Empty (with today's gas prices of about ~1850-1900/liter). That should be enough to get you from Seoul to Gwangju, with a bit left over. Figure about 400 kms on a full tank (plenty to get you to Gwangju)....
DO NOT FILL UP ONCE YOU'RE ON THE HIGHWAY-- gas stations on the highway (at the rest stops) are 20-30% more expensive than regular ones on the street.
I'm assuming you'll take Highway 1 to Daejeon, then the 25 down to Gwangju-- there's only one toll of about 13-15,000 won (if you take another road to avoid Daejon, there's an extra toll of about 5-7 thousand) -- you get a ticket at the entrance in Seoul, pay it as you get off in Gwangju-- cash only!! Once you're on the highway system, you cant get off without paying a toll to access local roads.
Plenty of rest stops along the way, every 40 kms at most.
Watch out for the speeding cameras!! They're usually posted in yellow signs and you're generally OK by going under 10 kms above the posted speed limit (ie speed limit is 90, you can go 99 without setting off the camera--- go 101, and you'll probably get a ticket in the mail a few weeks later)
Stay safe and enjoy! |
