Has this type of mass savage killing been known to happen in other first world countries? This just seems so inhumane and sick to do to any animal regardless of the circumstance.

| But the difference, highstreet, is that it would be condemned in those countries and pressure would be put on to stop it. In Korea? Nobody gives a crap here. Where is the outrage from the Koreans? They are the ones that will have to express it, not a few foreigners. |

It's pretty sad but let's keep in mind a few things:
These farmers are in the business of raising and killing livestock. There could be huge repercussions to not only their businesses but the entire South Korean economy, that's why they're taking such drastic measures.
I agree that they should probably be killed before being buried. Get the South Korean army to come in and blast all the pigs and toss em in the pits, I dunno, though I think that'd take too long anyway.
But given the circumstances I understand why the farmers did what they did.
Until someone comes up with a solution on how to cull the bad animals in a better way, there's really no use in telling people to put a stop to it.
Money talks, b.s. walks. That's the only thing that makes a difference in this world; CASH. Give the farmers the tools/ideas to cull the animals just as fast and they'll do it.
As much as we say that it's inhumane, etc. livestock are a legal business and the only thing that matters is the bottom line. |

This has been on the news here multiple times. Many people lost their jobs over the mishandling of the culling of livestock. The Ministry of Agriculture has been in the process of inspecting all the burial sites and is re-burying many sites because it was done wrong the first time. The government is rewriting their plans on how to properly and humanely deal with livestock pandemics/epidemics. Action is being taken. Many Korean people are embarrased. Many Koreans are upset. |

How do you know that nobody gives a crap here? Have you shown the video to any Koreans? Have you posted it on any Korean sites? Have you tried talking to Koreans about the issue? |

| I think a lot of Koreans would agree that it's not a pleasant sight, but they don't really have that same Western liberal caring disposition towards animals. After all, they are only pigs. |

I'm pretty damned sure that Koreans ARE horrified by these live burials.
Read the English subtitles closely: you'll see that they contain many errors typical of Korean speakers, and this leads me to believe that it was a Korean member of an animal welfare group that made and posted this video.
Koreans are just as repulsed and horrified about the brutal way these animals were destroyed as we are. |

Yeah whatever. Shows how ignorant you are. This isn't so much that you're some kind of animal activist as much as you NEED to rail against Koreans to make yourself feel superior. Of course in your small world/mind, since SOME Korean farmers did this, then ALL Koreans must be to blame.
And for the record, yeah, this sort of brutality is quite commonplace in our home countries as well:

Sounds like somebody's got an inferiority complex.
And I will add, this is a discussion forum related to life in Korea. This isn't the American job discussion forum. This isn't the Australian job discussion forum. It is about Korea. So, it is pretty desperate when you try to show stats from other countries in an attempt to deflect what is happening in Korea. Man, and you are the one talking about being small minded. However, I am not surprised that you like to pull out the petty and shallow insults as you've done so often on posts here. It is called insecurity. Attention seeking. The point of this post is about the atrocity that was committed in Korea. Where is the outrage? Isn't this a place which protests like crazy if the US sends a hamburger over? I don't doubt that there are Koreans who are upset over this, but I would like to see if anything is being done to stop it. On the Korean end. And please, mad, stay on topic. Focus on the issue at hand.

In Thailand, about 10 years ago, they did the same thing. They just picked up the pigs in a fron-end loader and dumped them into a huge pit and filled it in. Buried the pigs alive.
Although I realize that there doesn't seem to be any practical way to kill the animals because there are so many of them, it is troubling to watch that footage.
Anyone brave enough, check out the documentary Earlthlings, I think it's called with Joaquin Phoenix as the narrator. That was a disturbing movie to see. |
