That is your problem right there. You are aiming too high. Kangnam and Jamshil are the best of the best and they will only take the cream of the crop.
Go anywhere else in Korea and you will be fine. |

When I think about it although at the time after hearing the same thing 3 times I blew up in the face of the head of school and recruiter, now I think it is quite funny...Canadian English said to me so seriously
Yes I understand I am aiming high and I bet if I do land a job there (gangnam, jamsil) it is an unwanted position left by a runner lol or that SLP. Though I am moving to be with my gf and she keeps insisting that everywhere I get offered is way too far. Though I really want to leave as I have just handed in my letter of resignation here and really want to pack my things!
Should I promise the head of school that I will bring over a carton of the finest local beer from Queensland that being XXXX haha! That could do it I think... |

I'm an Aussie who lived a few years in England and then the majority of my life in the United States. I've traveled around SE Asia a bit and from the people I've come into contact with it seems most are able to understand Canadian/American English much better than Aussie/Brit/Irish etc...North Americans typically speak more slowly and pronounce their syllables more distinctly.
I could see how some schools might find that more desirable when teaching phonetic English. |

Is Coopers from SA? Oh god! Coopers Pale Ale is my fav of Aussie beers. No wait I take that back did you have little creatures???? Next time if you come it is a must!
I speak very slowly now since having lived in Taiwan and with Koreans here. Maybe that will help.
XXXX is the worst beer there is! It is even worse when a queenslander wears the god damn shirt round! |

Yeah Coopers is South Australian beer......and I love Little Creatures, its my favorite Aussie beer, made in Fremantle...I actually know the owner...he's a good friend of my Uncle who lives in Perth...10 years back I met him (I believe he was just starting the brewery) and he brought some over for us to try.
Last year was the first time I was back in Oz in almost a decade and was surprised to learn that Little Creatures had really grown, not surprisingly though, its a great beer. |

The guy you met has done so well in such a short time!
The taste is fantastic and for yuppies like myself it is a beer which is acceptable in a nice modern bar where beer is usually a no go. Though for real Aussie blokes the label honestly needs to be changed. Could you see many Aussie guys drinking that at the pub with a chubby little boy with wings on the label haha!
It is really big here in Brisbane now where I live at southbank. There are all these little boutique bars instead of pubs in my area and this is their biggest seller! |

| Haha yeah the label is definitely not the manliest of labels. I'm currently living in the US right now in an area where microbreweries are HUGE. The supermarket down the road has over 500 different bottles/brands to choose from. Huge market for craft beers over here. |

Hey guys.
My recruiter used to run a private institute East of Seoul.
He was fine for a few years then one year he hired an Irish couple.
They were extremely nice people.
None of the students, however, including the co teachers and headmaster himself, could not understand a thing they were saying.
Because the accent deviated so much from the accent they were used to from all the English education material (i.e: North Western American Accent. also Western Canadian Accent)
So the students complained and the parents started withdrawing their children from his school.
He had to close the school with huge debt within months.
K, guys.
The accent is serious matter to Koreans here.
Not everyone here is an accomplished Anglophone and can distinguish different accents nor can they decipher what a person from Liverpool is saying. Just like half the North American populace cannot.
Teaching English is business here, and when there is risk to stable profit, they are right to say no to you.
If you have a non standard North American accent and got a nice job in Seoul Metro, good for you!
But if not... Just accept any decent offer even if it's outside of Seoul.
Getting a few years of experience that way is tons better than dancing naked, serving drunks, greeting shoppers and flipping patties in your respective home countries while working on your Master's degree. |
