I am trying to save myself as many trips as possible. Also, I know the rules and regulations are in the process of changing. Therefore, if anyone can answer my questions below or make corrections to something that no longer applies, it would be greatly appreciated.

I will attempt to list the steps below so far as I see them. Please correct me if I am wrong and I will edit.

(Please note steps 2-5 might change depending on what is agreed upon by the US and Korean Embassies):

1. Get married on paper at the Ward Office in Korea and have the Mayor of the Ward Office issue a certificate of marriage that is recognized in Korea. You will need to bring:

- Foreign spouse's original and translated affidavits of eligibility of marriage (Where do I get these and how many copies do I need?)
-A notarized document proving the foreign spouse's nationality (I need to copy my passport and have it notarized in Korea?)
-Marriage report form (Where do I get this and how many copies do I need?)
-ID cards of both spouses

2. Korean spouse obtains Family Census Register issued by the Mayor of the Ward Office: 3 copies in Korean and 1 translated copy.

3. Preliminary procedures to obtain a Certificate of Marriage from the US embassy at the American Citizens Services Section (this can take up to 4 months?!?) You need to bring:

-Foreign spouse's proof of US citizenship (Original passport only is ok?)
-Foreign spouse's proof of termination of any prior marriages (Where do I get this and how many copies do I need?)
-Korean spouse's copies of the Family Census Register {see #2}
-Korean spouse's ID card and Name Stame {Tojang} (huh?)
-Korean spouse's proof of termination of any prior marriages (Where do I get this and how many copies do I need?)
-Foreign spouse's Affidavit of Eligibility for Marriage down through "Date Divorce Final": 3 originals, no copies. (Where do I get this?)
-Foreign spouse's Report and Certificate of Marriage" down through "Date Divorce Final": 3 originals, no copies. (Where do I get this?)
-$92 to process and notarize all the above

4. Continuation of procedures to obtain a certificate of marriage to be completed by registering at the Korean Ward Office and getting the Mayor's signiture on the following forms. You need to bring:

-Foreign spouse's Affidavit of Eligibility for marriage {see #3}
-Foreign spouse's Report and Certificate of Marriage {see #3}
-Korean spouse's Affadivit of Eligibility for Marriage (Where do I get this?)

5. Return to the American Embassy to obtain the Certificate of Marriage after submitting the documents from part #4 (This part can take up to 4 months?)

6. Go down to immigration to obtain the F-2 visa. You will need to bring:

-Passport
-Visa application form (Where do I get this?)
-Korean marriage certificate
-US marriage certificate
-Financial stability documents (What has been needed recently?)
-Reference of a spouse with Korean citizenship (huh?)
-2 passport photos
-F2 application fee (How much?)

Did I miss anything? Please let me know and I will edit.

I am looking for a link to the F-2 visa process. I have looked on immis website, among others, but I want some detailed information (eg. go here, take this with you, then go here, take this with you, etc.)

Thanks Smile

Which class of F2; marriage, points, other?

From what I've heard immi has info pamphlets available in the offices and are being quite helpful toward people persuing this route. I do know an E-2 visa holder that has successfully attained the F-2 through the points system.

This visa and the process appear to be available and attainable with reasonable effort.

Marriage visa Smile

I edited the original post to include the steps as I understand them to be so far.

Yes, there are pamphlets and other sources that cover these topics. However, I have not found any that were very detailed on the process from start to finish.

I don't think embassies issue this anymore.

We did US embassy for notarization, and then ward office for marriage. Wife had to go back to ward office for marriage document, but no return to embassy. Then on to immigration.

I've heard people had problems with the lack of foreign marriage certificate, but we didn't.

From another thread on this:

Yet another update....

I got the call from the Canadian embassy and all is apparently good to go. I went back and got the affidavit. They told me that they have officially worked out a deal with the Korean government (as of today) and the paper entitled 'Statutory Declaration of Legal Marriage' will work in place of a Canadian marriage certificate. Just take your Korean marriage certificate and 57,000won to the Canadian embassy and you'll walk out the door with this paper.

I asked, "What if I go to the immigration office and they don't know about this?". They said "...immediately call us and we will sort it out."

So it all sounds good to go. I'll be going and applying for the F-2 on March 7th, so we'll find out how smooth things actually go.

It appears as though the Canadian Embassy has cleared this up. Any word on the US embassy? The process appears MUCH, MUCH more simple than before. Take the Korean Marriage Certificate in the door with some won and walk out with a paper that will satisfy Korean Immi.

I did all of the paperwork towards the end of last year. My wife and I went to the embassy and turned in the required forms. Then, we went to the local ward office and filled out more forms. Finally, we went back to the U.S. embassy and turned in the forms from the ward office. They (the embassy worker) said you are now officially married.

I am wondering if this marriage is official in the U.S. as well? We are going to have our actual traditional wedding ceremony in the U.S. soon and the officiant in the U.S. is wondering what we had done already. It seems from the previous posters that we were only officially married in Korea. Is this true? I thought we were married in both countries but now I am second-guessing my information.
