| surprised nobody suggested defragging. It'll shorten the time the HDD finds the info from your HDD. Also, if you just have 1-2 gigs of ram upgrading to 4 gig should help on the load. |
Only if there is a load time performance issue. Its frustrating trying to troubleshoot without hardware, OS, and lifetime information. |

Might possibly help if you're still on XP.....but Vista and W7 defrag automatically.
In fact, it has been said that W7 runs best of all when not tinkered with at all.......but of course, there's always a geek out there with a way to improve anything. |

First of all:
1) Need specs [ use CPUZ free download ]
CPU:____________
RAM:____________
Video Card:__________
Power Supply:_________
Motherboard:___________
2) Erase all your garbage programs[toolbars, needles registry cleaners, 2 or more anti viruses, etc...-Control Panel-->Programs]
3) Start--run-- msconfig -- check your startup programs and uncheck ones that are not needed[ updates and stuff like that]
4) Back up important files
5)Then "clean" install windows[XP/Vista/7]
6) If you know how, Overclock using BIOS !!!! but make sure your specs include decent cpu/northbridge cooling and case cooling |

| if you get an ssd to replace your hard drive, how do you transfer all of your old files to the new one? |
You can use Acronis or other disk cloning software. Many of the retail SSDs include disk cloning software. You definitely want to put Windows and commonly used apps on the SSD. Everything else can go on the standard hard drive. After transferring, there's some tweaks to optimize Windows for the SSD.
I wouldn't replace the hard drive with an SSD because of their size limitations. Anything over 128GB is super expensive. If you have a notebook, you should have an empty HDD bay with a connector. After your done, you can marvel how fast Windows loads.

| As a compromise to this, I'd suggest installing 'Avast Antivirus Free Edition'. All anti-virus softwares will slow the computer to some degree, but this one isn't so bad, though it doesn't detect as well as some others. Completely avoid Norton Antivirus, as it seems to be one of the worst offenders I've seen in slowing the computer down. |
Microsoft Security Essentials works great and never interrupts (64-bit) when updating. |

Forget windows and install Ubuntu and your computer will run much, much faster.
Of course if you're great with computers and would like to use internet explorer for Korean websites, I recommend going with either XP or Windows 7. |
