I have a 2nd generation iPod touch that is nearly 2 years old. About 2 or 3 months ago the sound started mucking up, and I'd have only one channel coming through. The other would come in and out as I wiggled the headphone plug. I have replaced the headphones, so it's definitely the jack, but obviously I'm out of warranty.

I've checked out the web videos about replacing the jack, and I was wondering what people's opinions are. Should I try it myself? Is it as easy as they make it look online? Has anyone done it themselves? Any recs for someone to do it for me for cheap? I can't see that getting Apple to do it would be an economically viable option.

This is more just annoying to me that anything. I'm not an audiophile, and I use my iPod mostly for listening to audio books. But I do this everyday, and as I walk and the cord gets bumped, the sound coming in and out does get on my nerves. I'd love to replace it with an iPhone, but can't justify getting a 2 year contract when I'm pretty sure I'll be gone before it's up.

Thanks for this. Have you used them?

Anyone else got 2 cents to contribute?

Thanks Smile

I can't help with your problem but I'll throw in another vote for that computer tech- had very fast & excellent service from them/him last year.

I do know that Apple won't touch products that have been modded, not even to fix unrelated problems, so I'd factor that into my decision.

Just an update:

I used Rick, as suggested and seconded in this thread. I found him to be very professional and accommodating. It turned out to be more than just a headphone jack, so cost me a bit more than initially quoted, but I'm still happy that it was much cheaper than getting it done out of warranty by Apple. It is now working perfectly and I'm really glad I didn't try to do it myself. He came and picked up my iPod (and computer, which I had the dust cleaned out of) on the other side of the city for no charge. I ended up meeting him in Shinchon to get my stuff back earlier than my pesky iPod would have otherwise have allowed. My computer is now running much cooler than it was the other day, so I consider it money well spent. I would definitely recommend Rick (from the link above) for your tech repair needs. Smile
