Hi, all-
I live in CA, but have kept my money in my Shinhan bank acct, since the exchange rate was horrible when I returned to the US.
I used to be able to go to the Los Angeles branch of the bank and transfer money. Now, they tell me the laws in Korea have changed, and I need to go to Korea in person to withdraw money!
Any help in solving this problem so I don't have to fly to get my money would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

If you have an international card or online banking you can get the money easily. If not, go to the local branch and see if they can help or call the branch in Korea and see if they can make a transfer |

That was pretty foolish on your part. As tough as the banks in Korea make it for people to access their money from abroad, why the heck would you move back home with(supposedly) no intent to return, yet leave your money in your Shinhand account? I understand the exchange rate sucked big time a couple of years ago, but still, no way I would leave my money in Korea. I would be nervous as hell about having any access to it.
I do know this, you probably are SOL. I had a money order that got lost and the Korean bank I was dealing with told me that I had to physically be in Korea to sign documents to get it replaced. They told me it would not be possible to do it from abroad. They are extremely anal and by the book about any dealings with money. Even if you've got everything set up(with an international card), you still have to hold your breath about pulling money out abroad. You might have to come to Korea and get it. I guess the price of the airfare pretty much will offset any of the positive exchange rate that you were looking for. Good luck. |
