| Hong Kong is always going to be the link b/w NE and SE Asia, being south of the Himalayas and a good hub for travel to India, plus all the English. Taiwan makes sense within NEast Asia. |

Not all of it. It depends on when you come and when you leave. hVisit the Forumosa website for more up-to-date and detailed info on that. The tax is quite high, though, for the first year - about 20%, If my memory serves me correctly. |

I think I've tangled w/the trollish TECO in the past...and with good reason....
Sure, EFL teaching conditions in the last half decade or so in E. Asia have gone to crap. But to suggest that the best bet for a newbie, or even an EFL vet ,is to go to Japan, is pure evidence of a con man, a sadist or even a psychopath.
Aside from JET, what kind of "lucrative" jobs for EFLers are out there for 98% of applicants?
A typical job ad from a few weeks ago: No airfare, no benefits. 200K a month because "barbarian teachers are always bad ones." Interview? Send us a FULL body photo to weed out "undesirables"!!!! Also, give us your "political/religious views"!! Rent(no mention of pension, medical, etc.)set at a minimum of 45K/mo.
Wow. Sign me up.
Yes, Korea, Taiwan, etc., conditions are not exactly gravy these days but who in the hell would take the average non-JET position (EFL) in Japan these days?

TECO is a veteran of online exchanges.
had a quick go at korea 10 years ago, fled to taiwan and has been posting on daves ever since.
Hows the bubble tea these days Teco?  |

I have lived in Singapore before. Even though it is claimed that Singapore has a high per capita GDP, the salaries there are not high. It seems that most of the money is either in the Govt Reserves or invested in infrastrucutre. Singapore infrastructures is great, one of the best.
I have my own theory about why people dont have a lot of money in Singapore. Maybe bcus if they have money, everyone will go abroad to study n work n eventually migrate. So, if they dont have money, they cant go anywhere.
Singapore also has a huge difference in wealth. There are few extremely wealthy but the majority is just getting by comfortably or so-so. The distribution of wealth is not reasonable and surely not comparable to other developed nations. |

Thanks for remembering me!
I've been on the North East Asian TEFL trail for a while now. No, I'm not trolling. Although I am not up to date on the specific details regarding the initial tax deductions for new teachers working in Taiwan, the first 6 months can often see new teachers paying up to 20% of their income in tax. Depending on when you come to Taiwan, you may get some of that returned or none at all. |
