A lot of the rants here definitely suggest that a lot of people here haven't fully grasped the concept of living in another culture, or of their even being another culture in the world besides their own.
|
A lot of them also haven't grasped the basic idea of how generalisation equals ignorance. What exactly do they learn in university? I don't want to come across all AES, but seriously guys..... get a f'in grip. |

Westerners don't wash their hands before eating? Westerners sure do, and they use soap and hot water, to boot! |
Not really:
American Society of Microbiology studies showed:
97% of females and 92% of males say they wash
of these only 75% females and 58% males washed
http://www.health.state.mn.us/handhygiene/stats/fairstudy.html
Average observed hand washing was 30%, 39%, and 51% among males at events 1, 2, and 3 respectively. |

It's funny how these same people who make these gross generalizations and have harsh reactions also trumpet the great Western education system and how it produces "critical thinking" and "creativity", two things utterly lacking in 99% of their posts.
What they learned in Uni was the same thing Uni students learn around the world- Some great stuff, along with a healthy mixture of how to pass the test and shlup up some essay so we can get to hanging out and having a good time. But shhhhh, its only Koreans who "study for passing the test".
Then the reverse extreme would mean that its okay for Muslim immigrants to engage in practices that we would find unsavory. After all we are telling them "When in Rome" by banning veils.
Or one could look at this and decide that its an extreme use of "When in Rome" in both cases and decide that "When in Rome" might be useful when it comes to table manners, but at other things not so much. |

But those that do tend to use warm water. 75% of females is pretty good. We never really expected men to be as clean, did we?
As for cold washing (common here), that counts as not washing, if you're looking at it from the microbiologist's standpoint.
Anyway, I love the slurping sounds while eating noodles. As long as someone's spittle doesn't land on my food or self, it's all good. |

| When I was first considering coming to work in Korea (last century!) I corresponded with an acquaintance already here. One bit of advice stuck out, I still remember it & it still pertains: "Korea is not for the squeamish." |

Maclean, you writing shows lots of ignorance, ignorance to other cultures, for sure. Korea is not a third world country, go try and live in one BUDDY!!
Schwa, your buddy was obviously not well travelled, 'korea aint for the squeamish', give me a break BUDDY!!
Maclean, Schwa, Korea aint for narrow minded folk, and not for people who put postings up on a forum showing their ignorance!!
Mods to be honest I don't know why you don't take posts like this down. There is never anything like this on the other forums. Why is it only this forum! Because Korea attracts by and large complete idiots. |

| I don't think schwa said anything particularly offensive. I mean I think the advice of "Korea isn't for the squeamish" is pretty sound because the squeamish would freak at eating live octopus, boondaegi, teachers drinking, public smoking, and a host of other things. To me it sounded as much as though he was saying "Korea isn't for the uptight". |

| They shouldn't ban veils. If they want to critisize the US or any other country about this that is fine with me and I agree with them. |

Sound advice in many ways.
Bascially if you are one of those people who grew up in the overly sanitized freak show that occurs back home sometimes then buckle up when you travel ANYWHERE outside NAm.
Still most of this thread varies from silly to a sad commentary on the blatant ignorance and racism some people try to hide as "social commentary". |

| Criticizing Korean behaviour is not racist, by any stretch of the imagination. First of all - and this will come to a shock to some - Koreans are not a race. Race is a social construct. And if any white person sitting beside me ate their food in a disagreeable manner I'd be just as grossed out. And, on the rare occasion, I encounter someone spitting on the street in Canada I let them know by gesture, glance or utterance that it's not acceptable. Is that also racist? Of course not, it's an expression of disapproval at vulgar behaviour. It happens everwhere. The only problem is that it happens in Korea at an astronomically higher rate than in the first world. Nothing to do with race pal. Nasty behaviour is nasty behaviour. |

maybe so, but come on. 'not for the squeamish' is pretty fair. My mom, for instance, was really taken back at the culture. not at all a negative thing, just surprised. it was funny seeing a korean guy offer her odeng, or fish on a stick. she politely declined....
live octo(as mentioned), dog soup, chicken feet, pigs feet, etc... all these thing are uncommon to most. |

I'd say that in theory it's still way ahead of Korea in that department... the problem is that it also goes out of its way to accomodate and empower students without teaching them humility or discipline. |
