The Joseon elite who (mis)ruled from the 14th to 20th c., are still around on account of their penchant for kowtowing to a bigger power to keep themselves comfy. Hence the unending glorifications of Joseon and exaggerations regarding dates, statues of US military men erected, and genuine lack of originality in their culture when held up to scrutiny with China and Japan. However, they have learned to copy and smooch quite well, and are adept at coercing their civilians into working like dogs and accepting very limited cut and dried views of the world, and so have been exceptionally successful economically.

Korean traditional culture generates views pretty much similar how Slavic and Germanic people approache their own traditional cultures in the modern time: Volk-ish.

I have been GREATLY annoyed for the last several years by newspaper articles which mention (The Joseon dynasty, 1292-1910). It's not that I'm a stickler for dates.. it's just the massive scale of the dates that're given.

1392 (As someone who teaches Korean history, I am a stickler for dates Wink )
