What I wrote to myself shortly after arrival:
London is a foreign country, even for the Brits.
Value for money, it's probably, no definitely, the worst place I've ever been.
As a venue for contemplating language, it's like a botanical garden.
If you think A Clockwork Orange is just a piece of literature, then you might want to avoid it.
I lived between Camden and King's Cross. A wee terrace prevented me seeing the street below, but the dialogue floated up:
I'll gouge your eyes out!
It's like a petri-dish for MMA.
London kicks ass

Very much so, though if you live in London for a while and really get to know the good haunts off the tourist trail, there is value to be found - busses instead of underground, good buffet restaurants, prince Charles cinema, free museums and galleries that are truly world class, free carnivals and festivals etc.

Anyhow, yes the USA beat the UK off of the top spot, but still 2nd place is pretty good and I'm wondering what the reasons for that may be...
it certainly isn't the weather or the laid backness of the people, the relaxing pace of life, the sort of culture that is passionately embraced by the locals (ie like in Spain or Italy or France) the rich and affordable local cuisine etc...
And by the way, I'm sure the popularity isn't just because of tourist reasons. |

No, Germany was the top spot. These were people polled about the nation-states, so the BBC World Service Country Rating Poll is really a geopolitical popularity contest, with some cultural inflections. No way the US could perform well on that one.
