I started a position last year before the FBI checks took affect. Does anyone know if a teacher is extending for the same school for a year, would they still need a FBI check?
I went through the thread and didn't find any answer. |

Hi; I requested my FBI back in December 2010. (Can't remember exact date.) My mom received it on 1/27/2011. I sent it off for apostille (to D.C.) on 2/18/2011 (overnighted it, and also included an overnight return envelope) and received it back on 3/8/2011.
My mom sent it to me on the 9th. Hope this helps. |

Sent application for CBC on 2/8/2011.
Arrived at FBI on 2/14/2011 (weather delay).
JUST received it back via FedEx today, 3/10/2011 (Was date-stamped 3/8/2011 and shown to have been completed on 2/28/2011).
Intend to make copy and send to Secretary of State for Apostille no later than tomorrow (crossing fingers that the government doesn't shut down.)
FYI--This "criminal" has a prior arrest for a Class C Misdemeanor (for which she was fingerprinted) and it IS NOT on her FBI CBC. |

I got my FBI background check done in about three weeks using vanilla US Post.
However, I sent my CBC to the US State Department on February 3rd for an apostille. It's March 11th and I'm still waiting. My job starts April 1st so I'm really starting to sweat. They haven't even cashed my check yet.
In conclusion, I wrongly believed that the CBC would be the longest part of the process. I thought that because they actually have to do something besides stamp it and send it back -- record the fingerprints, check the prints against their massive database, update information -- in addition to stamping it.
The US Federal apostille, if my experience is typical, is longer than the FBI check now. Plan accordingly. |

It takes about 1 month or 1 1/2 to get the FBI check.

You can pay extra to have the apostille (federal) expedited. As many people do, so they get a better chance at the job if you're not hired already. I guess some people pay extra so they have all their paperwork ready, whereas others are still waiting for their paperwork. Also, they do that to meet their Visa deadlines.
People expedite the FBI apostille process in 3-5 business days, while others wait 15-25 business days (not including weekends) which takes about 3-4 weeks.
So if you need to expedite the apostille, you can, by using an expedited apostille agency such as www.apostillepros.com.
As for the FBI background check process, you can't expedite that. FBI background check takes 6-12 weeks, but I heard a lot of people on the forum are getting them in 2-5 weeks this time of year.

I have a question about the Apostille. WHERE DO WE GET THE CUSTOMS FORMS?
My FBI CBC took EXACTLY the three months turn-around time as indicated on the FBI website. Not only that ... I included a cover letter stating I need the doc. "prepared for apostille by Dept. of State." This caused a chain-of-reaction inquiry process by the FBI, since I did not clearly state "This document will be used for internatoinal employment." Even though I stated it "would be forwarded to Korea for employment purposes." (I assumed that was clear enough).
My friend then sent the CBC onward to Dept. of State with requisite pre-paid global priority-mailing envelope. I got the tracking number from USPS stating it was received at DOS on 1.31.2011.
I never recieved the apostilled document within the 2-3 weeks turn-around as stated on the DOS website. Wrote several e-mails to them (no return e-mail from them).
What happened was this: The DOS refused to contact me, only interacting with the friend who sent in my apsotille cover letter to the DOS (the letter contained his US phone number).
I live in Korea, so I figured the Dept. would not call me here. Hence, I provided no Korean mobile phone number.
Several e-mails were sent to my friend from the DOS, in response to his return e-mail message he sent to DOS, replying to a voicemail message left by the DOS.
APPARENTLY, the DOS has a new policy now, WHERE THEY WILL NOT SEND INTERNATIONAL PRE-PAID SHIPPING ENVELOPES FORWARD TO KOREA WITHOUT A CUSTOMS FORM FILLED-OUT. (see below).
Please, davesescafel posters ...do not write to Mr. Hatchett at the US DOS. I imagine that office has public servants assigned to individuals' SS #'s or servants assigned to individuals' alphabetically-listed last names, anyhow.
So, SENT fingerprinted DOCS. to FBI in Nov. 2010. Have not received them in Korea or USA, yet, as apostilled, as of March 12, 2011.
p.s. ...We have a one-time grace period this year on transferring a visa to another job, without using FBI CBC/APOST. Do not need Apostilled FBI CBC, I was told by English-speaking Immigration officer, with Korean speaking person as translator on my side of phone line. Officer spoke to me in clear/well-spoken English and was certain about the process.
APPLIES TO TRANSFERS ONLY.

Hmmm, did you send in your CBC using "vanilla" USPS also? Because the web site indicates that doing so could indeed add an additional two to three weeks onto your wait time. That's in addition to the 15 days it usually takes. |

Yeah don't go with what's on their website. There are apostille service that do the apostille in one day, but it'll cost you.
Dealing with the government is a pain these days by mail. They fired workers.
