While I'm teaching in Korea, I plan to use vacation time to travel (Thailand, Cambodia, etc.) Unfortunately my current insurance doesn't cover travel vaccinations, so they referred me to a travel clinic where the average price for these sorts of vaccines is $400.

Would it be cheaper to get these in Korea?

Vaccines I need:

-Hepatitis A and B
-Typhoid
-Malaria
-Yellow Fever? (not sure if I need this one)

Pretty sure there is no such thing as an effective malaria vaccine...?
Don' t think you need yellow fever for SE Asia, hep B is super cheap (like $5) from local government health clinics, and hep A is about $50 from a doctors out here.

Was thinking of the pills, which I hear are pretty expensive.

Depends on what pills you want and where you are going.

Doxycycline is cheap in Thailand and available OTC.

Your other vaccines are cheap and easy to get in Korea.

I got 90 days worth of doxycycline here for 30,000won. The doctor told malarone was cheaper here than in UK or US too.

The pharmacy next to my house in Thai charges $12 for 90 caps of Doxy.
The pharmacy in the hospital charges $15.

doxycycline is pretty toxic stuff. Especially considering how much you have to take to make an effective prophylaxis for malaria.

If your not getting slightly ill, your not taking enough. Don't even think about drinking on that stuff if you want to avoid scarring your liver.

You would be much better off wearing Deet spray ( above 10%) and longer clothing.

If you have the national health insurance once you get to Korea, it is wayyy cheaper than doing it at home (provided your home is the U.S.). I'd just wait 'till you come over.

Is Doxy what most people take...? Doesn't sound too appealing.

Thanks, that's the answer I was hoping I'd get! SO expensive here! (And yeah, I'm in the U.S.)
