I wish my colleagues had better table manners.

At my house feel free to watch tv, put your elbows on the table, and mismatch your cutlery til your heart's content. None of these will disgust me. But the moment you start chomping, smacking, snorting, coughing and talking with your mouth bulging with food, you'll be asked to leave. Because that is disgusting.

There's a difference.

I've been here for years and never noticed most of the things Maclean keeps harping on about. Slurping noodles, and soups sure, but what's the big deal I love it. Maclean you should have taught at my middle school back in Blighty, a sink estate, the kids could barely use a knife and fork. You have this idea that westerners have great table manners, reality check they don't!! All this stress must bad for your blood pressure, for what I don't know. You'll be on melt down if you carry on: white straight jacket, one way ticket back to the land of table manners. Ta ta!!

Well, I just realized that two of my co-teachers have oozing cold sores. I'll not be sharing anything with them, thank you very much!

To the original poster: you, my friend, are going to have an interesting and frustrating year. One filled with questions and comparisons, one that will puzzle your co-workers and one that you will spend the bulk of it discussing the various nuances of this culture with people who feel the same as you.

I wish you luck and a good support group when things really start to get tough.

It's quite sad that you don't fit in with polite society in your country. Or that you can't come up with anything interesting to say at dinner parties. I suppose like most Brits these days you'd be happier with a plate of stodge on your knees and Eastenders on in the background.

Just my opinion. Do you have a link to a source that says they don't?

To the OP: You can either bear it or make a scene and hope for the best result of it. It may end up ruining your relationship with your co-workers. I suggest eating alone at a different table.

If you choose to make a scene, here is how I would do it:

Start eating. As soon as the first person coughs on my food, I'd stop my spoon and push my tray away. When someone asks what I am doing, I'd point out that someone just sneezed/coughed on my food and that's disgusting. Then I'd refuse to eat the rest of my lunch, giving someone a silent guilt trip.

Just my opinion. Do you have a link to a source that says they don't?

So you don't have a link!! To answer YOUR question:

Do I have LINK to say otherwise. No, I don't! Do I have LINKS to say they DON'T, YES I do!!!

This link is for the viewing figures for Eastenders on December the 25th 2010.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/s2/eastenders/news/a294814/eastenders-tops-christmas-day-ratings.html

The link shows that 11.4 million viewers watched Eastenders. Bear in mind folks that this is a national holiday in blighty called Christmas day. People were not out and about because nothing is open. Perhaps people were busy playing PASS the salami!!

Here is another link for March 2011. The viewing figures for this particular night were 8.3 million. People MUST have been busy playing PASS the SALAMI again.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/soaps/news/a307162/soaps-ratings-roundup-march-3.html

The following link shows the approx. figure of the population in the U.K. which is 61.8 million.

Your OPINION that MOST people eat their STODGE on their laps whilst watching EASENDERS doesn't seem to add up.

I kindly suggest that you think before giving an opinion. Opinions can be very misleading!!
