I teach adults and most of them can pronounce "r" and "l" quite well. However I have a few new students who are intermediate level who can pronounce "l" words fine but when saying "r" words they sound like they're still saying "l".
Do any of you have any suggestions for helping them learn to pronounce "r" words properly?

Thank you

you have to get them to visualize their tongues and how it's shaped. like when you pronounce L's, the tip of your tongue touches the back of your teeth. with R' your tongue kind of makes a bowl shape.

Simply tell them that "L" touches and "R" does not.

It's not easy and best if they can clearly see while practicing the articulation.

Why not try EnglishCentral's pronunciation tools. Expert advice and visuals. What's cool is that you can call up a library of videos with that sound/phoneme and students can practice by recording the lines too.

We'll also have a full Korean translation of the site/interface which users can turn on/off soon (hopefully by the end of the week - testing it now). Can't but benefit your students to work on this outside the classroom too.

Would someone taught me.

Use the wooden chopsticks you get from family mart. Have students put one between their lips - no teeth and don't hold down on it too hard.

The 'L' pronunciation will cause the tongue to flick out the chopstick, while the 'R' sound will not. Combine this with diagrams of the mouth during these movements of sound and your own demonstration to the students.

I have found this really helpful as students (all ages) enjoy practicing this and its easy for them to do at home.
