|
|
Hey guys, hoping someone might have some knowledge about a little problem I've got. I was hanging out with my girlfriend last week when she got a text message. The message showed as being from me, which was bull. The text basically told her to F off, but showed as being from my number.
The same thing happened to me about a year or so ago, I was hanging out with a friend and she got a text that said it was from my number, and said some pretty crazy stuff. At first I was a little worried that such messages might be sent to my co-teachers as well, which would make for a really awkward situation, but it was all good. With the phones we received upon arriving in Korea, it was a simple matter to change the number that the text would show as being sent from. It was just a friend taking a poke at me. Anyways, that first time was all in good fun, and was pretty damn funny.
This most recent time kinda pisses me off, however. Does anyone have any knowledge about this? Is there any way for us to find out where this text message actually came from? I don't understand why this is allowed, the ability to change the 'from' number shown with a text message could very easily be used to cause havoc with peoples personal lives. |

I hope you don't have Multiple Personality Disorder, and it was the other you who sent that message! Only joking
That could indeed cause trouble in relationships (professional + private).
Although now i have an excuse to text some people telling them to eFFF off. lol.
But serously though, that is not a nice thing to happen. I hope someone can help explain. |

You can go to an SK office and for a small fee they will trace it and tell you the real number from which the messages are being sent. I knew someone who did this. It may be the actual SK headquarters you need to go to, but well worth the effort.
This problem really needs to be publicized! |

Agreed with above comment, but would add that it is quite difficult and a rather time consuming process (at least I was told by SK) to get those kind of records.
Cant recall exactly what was said, but from my understanding there is an extensive paperwork process..numerous methods to prove my own identity, a fee, and a waiting period just to get records that were involved with my own phone.
And even then, it will not give you the complete number..the numbers shown will look something like this...010 - 33**-**** or some other verification. At least from what I was told, the only way to get complete numbers from someone who had contacted you (as in a situation like you described ) would be to file a complaint with the police, and to submit a police investigation report along with the other documents needed to get such records. (assuming the police found it worth investigation and actually filed a case) |

I wish someone would create an app that would allow you to outright block certain numbers and text messages.... |

That difficult to find out huh? And not really much use unless they gave the whole number... Guess there's not much I can do. Not really worried about it messing up my relationship, she trusts me enough to know I wouldn't send something like that, and since we've already seen one together, if it happens again she'd know what it was. Still though, it's bullshit that it's so easy for people to do this. |

How many people do you know that have your number and your girlfriend's number both?
and of those people who had your friend's number?
There is your answer. I can't imagine it being that many people. |

Haha, that reminds me of my old Anycall phone. When sending text messages, it gave you the option of changing the sender number. Being such a hilarious prankster, I had lots of fun sending fake messages to friends from other friends. Good times! |

Well in all fairness, getting what you describe may not be as difficult as what I went through. In my case, I was trying to receive a written transcript of all text messages sent and received from my phone over a two day period (I was gathering evidence of slander and threats made against me by a mentally unstable woman) That may have made for a more complicated process on the part of the carrier to find and give those records rather than simply finding phone numbers.
Also another point, when I first came to Korea my phone and carrier were through KT. Later I switched to SK but kept the same number (the KT number) and so to bring up those records i was searching for there was an extensive process of SK having to make requests to KT and so on.
Also coupled with the fact that this was several years ago and service providers were not as well equipped to deal with foreigners concerning issues like this.
In your case, if your GF is Korean and her own phone (my service contract was actually in my professors name at that time complicating it even further) it may not be as complicated as I initially described. |

Sorry, I guess the original post wasn't very clear. The offensive text my girlfriend received looked like it came from MY number. And lots of people have both mine and my gf's number.
I have my suspicions about who it is, but don't want to cause trouble without some kind of proof. |

and how many of those people had the other friend's number?
and how many of them have a phone capable of spoofing the number?
For example I don't think you can do it with the iPhone, I'm not sure about other smart phones like the Galaxy S |

Oh sorry, I should have explained a bit more.
When it originally happened, I knew for sure that it was a foreigner sending the fake texts, because of the perfect english and use of idioms that I'm sure no Koreans would use so well. This time, I'm relatively sure it's a Korean, or meant to look like one. Regardless, It's definitely not the same 2 people in both these instances.
But yeah, I'll see about going in to the phone company with her to see what we can find out. Hopefully it won't be too crazy a process.
Thanks for the thoughts guys. |
