Hi all,
I was offered a position in a private school in goyang today and whilst all the signs seemed very positive, I still have some reservations. The school itself has only one other western teacher there who will be leaving once I arrive and I was wondering how easy it is to make friends in this area without making the connections through work. Basically I would appreciate anybody had any first had experience of the goyang area/working as the sole English teacher in a school. |

It depends on where you are in Goyang, but at any rate you'll only be a short bus ride from Ilsan and "meat street", where you'll find plenty of foreigners. (It's called meat street because of the large amount of restaurants there). You'll also find quite a few buses to Hongdae from most places in Goyang.
Just to set the record straight. Goyang is an administrative district to the northwest of Seoul, and the most developed part of Goyang is Ilsan. However Hwajeong is also in Goyang and there a few good places there as well. The "worst" case would be living somewhere between those places, but even then you'd have lots of buses going around to good locations like Hongdae, Seoul Station (a very central location), and so on. |

I live in Hwajeong which is about 10 minutes away from Ilsan....still all Goyang. It's a great area, we really like it. You're very close to Ilsan, and there is a TON of foreigner activity happening there if you're interested in that. Then it's about 45 mins to an hour into Seoul for most areas. Im really happy in this neck of the woods.
Foreigners will be easy to meet, if you're worried about being at a school without other foreigners. If the school seems to be legitimate I'd go for it. |
