My coteacher told me yesterday i need to go to the hospital and take a health exam.
Still haven't got an explanation of why.
In an EPIK job.
I took one to enter the country and start working. I took one random one in the middle of the year at my previous school (for my health insurance they said). I took another to re-sign for this year's contract. Now i'm being asked to take another, for whatever reason. Then I will need to take another one in May if I decide to re-sign my contract.
That will be 5 in less than two years.
Anyone have a clue what it's about? Am I obligated to in any way? I'd kind of rather not pay 70,000 to take one if it's really not necessary.
Anyone have this experience? |

If your paying 70k, then I don't know why your school is making you.
I had to get a health check 3 months after my re-signing health check, but it was free. Did they say if you have to pay or not? |

There's some sort of health check that all public employees get every year or two. I was approached about it and then never ended up doing it and nothing ever came of it. If I remember correctly it was free, unlike the renewal health check. |

Is it like a check up? Or the whole immigration routine again, blood draw, drug tests and all? |

Turns out it was a misunderstanding.
I don't need to take one.
And yeah, last year mid year I got one done at my school and it was free, but I was still wondering why I needed to do it.
Thanks. |

You're required to take a test because of morons like this:

Ok...basically I'm concerned that I may an STD...HPV which can result in genital warts but I don't think it shows in blood or urine tests anyway? Will get tested before I leave but I don't have much time for getting tests/results/treatment if it turns out I do have anything! Very embarassing and I've never had anything before so I'm hoping it's just not the case! |

You're working in a public school environment and employed by the government, therefore, drug tests, medical checks, blood tests, etc. are all mandatory. This is the case even if you're renewing and/or have stayed in Korea for an extended period of time. They're not accusing you of anything, it's just a precautionary measure that every school takes. When you have idiots who try to bypass the screening process and are eventually caught with a STD/drugs, the school is plastered all over the media with parents going nuts after they realize their childrens' teacher had possibly infected their kids with an STD. Something I'm sure most schools would like to avoid.. |

You can't give STD's by teaching ESL. I can't believe I had to write that.
Also, I find it extremely alarming that you consider a person a moron who contracts an STD.

You come up with that all by yourself genius? Well, no **** sherlock. But, I don't think ANY parent (much less fear-driven Korean parents) would want their kids hanging around a teacher who has HIV/HPV/etc. And I don't think any country would accept someone with a transmittable disease to legally immigrate to this country. |

The USA now allows people with HIV to work and immigrate into the US.
Where is your hatred for sick people coming from? The vast, vast majority are responsible people and are not out to infect you.
No offense, but I have never heard of parents worrying about whether their kids teachers have HIV. You can't catch it from your teacher.
@smartwentcrazy - what country are you from? HIV paranoia disappeared in the states about 15 years ago. |

I can't believe how incredibly dull you are. Please point me to where I said anyone who contracts an STD is a moron. I said people who attempt to bypass or circumvent immigration law in order to immigrate here with an STD is a moron. You are breaking the law, and because of these people who break the law, we are required to do undergo these health checks every year.

We're not talking about the U.S. now are we? We're talking about Korean immigration law. Stick to the topic and stop trying to deflect the issue.
My hatred for sick people? Again, please show me where I have explicitly stated I think people with a disease/ill are morons. My qualms are with those who try to break the law getting into this country - nothing else. I could care less if you have AIDS, gonorrhea, syphilis, HPV, etc. That's obviously not something to be judgmental about. Just don't try to break the law and attempt to teach here. It's laughable that you're trying to take the moral high ground when obviously you lack the reading comprehension skills to fully understand what I'm arguing. |

Yes, arguing that people with STD's are not morons and need work like me and you is the moral high ground.
Furthermore, your concern with whats legal rather than whats morally right is disturbing. |

"HPV WHO GETS IT?
Human papillomavirus (HPV) affects both females and males. HPV transmission can happen with any kind of genital contact with someone who has HPVintercourse isnt necessary.
Many people who have HPV dont even know it, because the virus often has no signs or symptoms. That means you can get the virus or pass it on to your partner without knowing it.
In the United States, an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females will be infected with HPV in their lifetime."

If you're not 100% positive you're not infected (as in you've been tested specifically for it) then odds are YOU HAVE IT TOO.
Now give the guy a break. |

Exactly. People with STD's are still human and deserve to be treated like the rest of us.
I've know many people with HIV, and I would personally rather work with them than half the people on this board.
People that equate whats legal with whats right scare me. Often times the two are not equivalent, sometimes not even close.
What's scary is people like smartwentcrazy called this guy a "moron" for trying to find work. Its not like the guy said "hey I'm going to look for people to infect with minor STD's" |
