| im not a picky eater. i'll eat just about anything. but, i don't like eating animal heads and feet. like, chicken feet. it's so unsightly. i've had it before, and it's not terrible tasting, but it's the visual of it that gets to me. that gross bumpy skin with the claws..... ighhhh. what abouts yous? |
it hasn't changed since I was five years old: Olives, mushrooms, fish. D-I-S-G-U-S-T-I-N-G! |
Have you lived or being in Taiwan and gone to a Chinese new years celebration in a small village? I remember the strangest food I had ever had one year was in a friends old village I was invited to in Nantou. The table was full of things I had never seen before.
Pig trotters were the favourite, pig intestine, chicken balls (honestly didn't like this it was cooked and then soaked in alcohol), chicken feet etc. The only thing I was used to eating was the prawns except strangely enough these Taiwanese guys who were at my table just ate the whole thing at once with the head attached and unpeeled!
To wash this strange food down was 58% kaoliang which was not served in shots but those big plastic cups.
This one lunch is one of my most vivid memories of Taiwan and not a good one either. I was sitting at a table of drunk old men being forced to drink petrol eating the remains of animal body parts on small chairs shoulder to shoulder with every guy smoking and chewing on beetle nuts while eating and drinking! |
You'll see many of the same dishes in korea. Koreans also don't peel shrimp usually. |

| i stopped peeling shrimp too. not because i've lived in asia for too long, but because i'm just too lazy and i heard the shell has a lot of nutrients in it anyway. |

I think laziness is the same reason they don't. Food in general lacks a lot of prep work here. |

| or maybe it's for pragmatic reasons. it's not necessary to peel the shrimp or cut off the head. it's not dangerous to eat. it's got nutrients and it's edible, so why not eat it? |

| i guess the same can be said of removing bone from chicken stir-fry dishes or fish heads from soups. |

are you saying that according to my logic, it's pragmatic to leave chicken bones in stir fry to eat? |

It was a joke.
I'm saying it's another example of laziness. Bone-in chicken pieces in curry or stir fries serve little purpose in my opinion.
And sure there might be some nutrients in shrimp shells, but they also compromise my enjoyment of shrimp a lot more than, say, leaving potato skins on. |

I'm one of those people. I have no idea why. I love cooked tomatoes, just can't stand raw. |

Shrimp/Prawns make me barf. I don't think I'm allergic, but I haven't eaten seafood in around 15 years and my body must experience some kind of shock when I eat them.
Most seafood makes me sick, actually, with the exception of scallops. I mostly just avoid it all nowadays. |

I'll try anything twice*.
* Not tripe. I read that it's not sanitary and chock full of stuff cows can't digest in the first place.
With that said, I see no point in wasting precious calories on food you don't enjoy. I avoid white carbs (unless they have a nice payoff like cake!) but I can't think of anything specifically I don't enjoy. |

Tripe is cow stomach lining. It's fairly common in Mexican food, most notably - menudo.
If not cooked correctly, it will have the bacteria naturally present in stomach linings. Frankly, I admit it's a paranoia and a strange place to draw the line for someone who chomps down on tongues and balls, but there you are. |

Do you peel bananas? How do you feel about egg shells? They are edible and high in calcium and minerals. |

i have eaten banana peel before and it's bitter and tough.
egg shell texture feels horrible when you eat it.
shrimp shells actually add a nice texture. shrimp heads and eyeballs are unsightly so i take it off.
i get what you're trying to do, trying to dismantle my argument. very typical of dave's users. does it make you feel good to be a smart ass on the internet? |
