Negros is by far the best vacation destination. It is not only one of the most beautiful islands, but very few tourists know about it. Dumaguete in the south is a beautiful, scenic, and quaint little town. It is a must see. From there there are several national parks only a short drive away. You can go dolphin watching up the coast and one of the most prestigious diving locations is in Apo island only a short drive south. Siquijor island is also a ferry ride away, and is one of the least populated islands in the Philippines (it is rumored to be haunted).
Leave Mindinao to Abu Sayaaf and check out Negros!! |

I agree, was just there in January, full of tourists and accommodation for the most part was crap. I'll take the beaches in Mindanao over Negros any day. |

If you're looking for a less-touristy place with great beaches and good/cheap accommodations, I can't speak highly enough about the less-known Bantayan Island. It takes about 4 hours by bus+ferry to get there from Cebu City (about 250 pesos total). The beaches are better than what I experienced in Kho Phi Phi, Thailand, and all the little resorts had beach-front bungalows for about $30/night. And there simply weren't a lot of people there. One morning, my girlfriend and I went out to the beach, and we didn't see another soul for an hour. There's a little street of good outdoor bar/grill type places just a short walk from the main resorts.
There's really no nightlife to speak of, but it's just a great place to relax and enjoy the beach.
(One other bonus I failed to mention is that unlike Cebu, I did not see a single Korean there) |

I considered going there but went to Puerto Galera instead. Mostly because I could not determine if there were any dive shops in Bantayan at all. I was under the impression the water there is very shallow and not deep enough for diving.
True or false?

I can only speak to Kota Beach, by Santa Fe, but you're right, it was shallow. I went out about 75 yards from the beach and the water was only up to my chest (I'm 6'3"). However, Kota is on the coast facing Cebu (and you can see Cebu), so maybe that side is shallower than the other side of the island. |

Keep an eye out for deals on Cebu Pacific Air. They had a promotion last month for 30,000W tickets if you book from August-November 2011. After taxes and fees, my round trip ticket cost 114,000W to Cebu. Gave me an excuse to stay at the Shangri-La  |

If you want to stay at a 5 star hotel with 3 star service, go for it. Oh yeah, 5 star prices.
