I only watched the first segment of the above video but the total contrast between England and Korea is easy to see. A lot of people on here openly complain about the school lunches served at school but really would you want to be routinely eating the kind of crap they serve in England?
I am just surprised that the kids will eat what is served in Korean school.. Western kids would take one look at kimchi, spinach, lettuce, etc and not touch it. |

The pics of UK lunches I've seen don't look half-bad. Certainly ten times better than American school lunches. It seems that pretty much every country but the USA serves a half-way decent school lunch. I blame America's "school as a business" model. |

US lunches are worse health wise.
I literally ate 3 deep fried chicken strips, hamburger buns, and fries everyday for 4 years. Not that I blame anyone, but it was our only option. |

That is the old model.
Now we've moved to the "school is a financial parasite" model, trying to squeeze the school expense down to nil. |

In state schools UK lunches are worse health wise and taste wise too, but that was back in the day when I was a student. I am not sure now but both my brothers claim they taste garbage: so what do the students do, they go out and get take aways at KFC and kebab places!!!
It says everything about modern day UK that it took a celebrity (Jamie Oliver) to bring this issue to the surface.
Although I seen inklings in Korea that suggest they are moving in the wrong direction: the first shop/business immediately outside my school sells those fried chicken balls (a big cup for 1,000 won) other places selling 붕어빵, 튀김 and other garbage too. My students are lined up there day after day from second graders (elementary) upwards. I know, i know its just one school but others I know have observed similar trends too. |

Don't mothers pack lunches anymore? I only ate school lunch in high school when I didn't have time to make lunch in advance. My school had plenty of salad and fruit, though. |

The Jamie Oliver School Dinners series dates back a few years, doesn't it? I think school dinners have improved nutritionally since then. |

It has been said that Brits and Americans don't like food. They just like eating. They don't take any interest in food. Where does it come from, what are the flavours etc.
Basically compared to other nationalities, it could be said that Brits and Americans are unsophisticated when it comes to food. |

I think a typical elementary school lunch was something like: Sliced meat of questionable origin, mashed potato or roll, canned green beans, orange slice, milk. Basically it aimed to hit the "4 food groups."
My mom packed my lunches as follows: bologna on white bread, bag of chips, granola bar or kudos, juice box or capri-sun. I was jealous of kids who got to eat a hot school lunch. Fortunately when my dad left the military, we were poor and got free school lunch. SCORE!
I stopped eating lunch around middle school (didn't eat breakfast either, though when I was "dieting" I would permit two rice cakes) and in high school I was known to just nosh on my friend's fries or eat a Little Debbie Starcrunch.
EDIT: To be on topic, I think my kindergarten school lunches are pretty good. I do wish we had more vegetables. I eat extra soup to make up for not eating rice. Some days are better than others in the protein dept. That's all. |
