|
|
The date on my ARC card is 3/26 but I was planning to leave on the 27th or 28th. I mentioned this to some friends today and they said that there is a fine for staying past the visa date. How do I go about extending this date and what is the fine if I don't?
Also, someone interested in taking my job declined since my hagwon doesn't pay pension. Has anyone had difficulty receiving their pension after their year is up? Just wondering if it is something I should demand next time I come. I've only heard bad things about it from my friends here, so I was confused that my potential replacement would decline the job due to it. |

Take your plane ticket to immigration and get your visa extended. They will do it for free. If you don't it could make it difficult to get another working visa in the future. You might even be able to extend it online.
Go to the pension office they will work it out for you. My brother did this, and because the hagwon didn't pay into the pension for the entire term of his contract, they had to pay his contribution as well their own. |

Get the visa extended down at the local immigration office asap. It only takes a few minutes (depending on the office). Otherwise they will most probably fine you at the airport.
The pension is not important and a hassle. |

A couple grand might be important to some, and worth the few hours spent in visiting the appropriate office. 5 hours of travel time, waiting in lines and talking to a few people garnered $3500. Do the math, and it might be worth the hassle. |

As to the consequences - a fine I think 100,000 per day. Also a blackmark on your record which just means getting a job again in Korea becomes twice as hard. Because you have blackmark everytime you apply for an E-2 (if you want one) you will have to do an consulate interview in your home country. Sorry not Japan-Visa trip for you. Also many schools will pass you up as you become to difficult and time consuming to get to the the country.
Also I think you can apply for a extension (non-working) on the Internet you might have to fax or scan something but it can be done.
So get you ass to the Immigration and get an extension. |

If you ever plan to return to Korea (or even if it is not a plan) an overstay will make it very difficult FOREVER into the future (compulsory consular interviews in your home country EVERY time you apply for a visa).
In addition you will be delayed at the airport when you go through passport control and will probably face a fine of 100k won. If you can't or won't pay the fine they keep you until you or your sponsor will. Sitting in a detention room and missing your flight is not worth 100k.
An extension is free. There are a couple ways to do it.
1) pop into your local immigration office with your ARC. passport and printout of your e-ticket. They will extend you until the date of your flight.
2) go to the immigration website and apply. You will need to scan/email or scan/fax your documents to them. They will e-mail you back a form to print off for your extension.
***e-Applications can be applied until three business days before the expiration of the applicants status. An appointment for visitation can be reserved until a day before the expiration date.***

As to pension: it is required by law. If you are from the USA, Canada or Aus you are entitled to a refund of the combined contributions when you depart (about 9% of your income for your time in Korea). It is easy to get, simply drop into the pension office with your plane ticket, ARC and passport. The money shows up into the bank account of your choice about 30-60 days after your departure. It is an extra month's salary (or about 2.3 million won for a worker earning 2.2 million and it is tax free).
1/2 of the contributions should have been paid by your employer (so your loss is about 4.5% of your income (about 1.2 million won per year) over the time you were employed). NOTE SAFERS are exempt from contributions and persons from NZ, UK or Ireland do not get a refund.
As to why the person declined ... If your boss is cheating on the pension you can bet that he also cheated and you were not enrolled in the national medical plan and you paid about 2x more than you should have for tax.
I wouldn't take the job either.

Someone told me you could stay 30 days past your visa expiration, as long as you are not teaching. Is this true? Has anyone heard this? |

IF you get the "FREE", tourism extension, yes you can.
you need a plane ticket, your passport and your ARC. Details are above.
If you don't get the extension you are in for a world of grief (also as outlined above.
