If Koreans want to smack their lips and what not and call it cultuire, good for them. If they want to cough on your food and then pretend they didn't, well, that's different.

Coughing on someone else's food without care shows a basic lack of consideration. Unless you are saying a lack of consideration for others is a Korean trait?

Korea is, in my opinion, Third World. Economically no, but we're not talking about economics here. We're talking about culture. And culturally speaking, it is still a third world country.

One of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard....You think other countries are aspiring to Western Culture?

I completely agree. First, not only is MacLean's assessment wrong, but second, he assumes, in the end, all countries are for want to aspire into little Anglo-Americas (e.g., ``Anglo-America is the gatekeeper of civility,'' or ``deep inside, we all want to be North American''). Japan has been exposed to the Western sphere of influence since 1868, and with an added burst since 1950, yet, culturally, resists volumes upon volumes of Western mannerisms, sensibilities, and philosophies, opting instead to incorporate (on an evolving manner), certain select Western traits. Fifty years from now, neither Japan nor Singapore nor Korea will be any more ``Western'' to us. Perhaps more ``international'', but not specifically American or Commonwealth British in the very least.

If that is what you want, perhaps you ought to move to LA's Korea Town, Chicago's Japan Town, or Vancouver's China Town, so that you can peaceably experience ``Asia Lite.''

In my opinion, MacLean should drop his Western metric ruler and just hang out with us, puking on passersbys, horking in bathroom stalls, and slurping containers of ramyeon atop Gwanaksan (while doing that thing we do with our mouths, you know?) ^.^ V

MacLean, join the cause!

Some people are acting like it's Korean custom to actively make sure that they cough, spit and vomit directly into your food-- it's more like it's the Korean mindset not to worry too much about it happening in the first place.

There's a difference... and if you spit into someone's food on purpose, then you're the jerk, not them. To be honest, I find it refreshing to find people who don't buy into antiseptic paranoia... seriously, the fact that you get that stressed out about it is probably worse for your health than having someone spit directly into your food.
