TECO-

It's been pretty widely used in the states (at least Colorado) for the past 5-10 years I would say.

Surprisingly, I've heard guys, mainly Canadians and Americans, use this word a lot in the last year. I've never heard people use it like that until recently.

When did it enter the lexicon as slang for asshole?

I never imagined that calling somebody a douchebag was a North American thing. I say it so often! Sometimes I like to mix it up and call people choads instead.

I've been out of North American for much of that time. I guess it went viral in the last 5 - 10 years while I was away.

You probably just weren't paying attention. Expats in Korea have been using the term since 2003:

I heard it here back then, too.

A local entertainment rag reviewed one of my favorite bars in a snarky way because it was full of "tragically hip people with square framed glasses and vintage t-shirts. One of my friends was in the accompanying photograph. She works at a record store where they sell vinyl LP's.

We are in our 40's

That bar is loved because the beer is cheap, there's good entertainment, and there's never a cover.

My other friends who go there are probably are wearing vintage T's and they are probably originals because they've been music fans since we were all skinny and androgynous looking...do these young writers remember David Bowie?
