|
|
I've been playing with my Ipad 2 for a couple hours now.
I have a 3GS so while being familiar with IOS, there were some differences with the Ipad IOS that needed some getting use too.
My first impression was the devices is heavier than it looks. I definitely don't see being able to hold it in one hand comfortably for long periods of time.
Having the volume/mute buttons on the right side is a little strange considering it is on the left on the Iphones.
As for the resolution of the screen, I don't see an issue of it not being a "retina" display. I find the best viewing distance is about 12-18 inches from my face. At that distance, you don't even notice any pixels. If you are holding this thing so close to your face that you see the pixels then you need glasses, not a retina display.
I was very impressed with Facetime. My sister got an Ipad 2 also, I spent about 30 minutes being able to talk and see my niece/nephews. Being able to walk around with it while video chatting, and switching between front/rear cameras was great. I wouldn't use Facetime to talk to someone regularly, but I think it is more than worth it to use for talking with family.
One thing that I don't like is the fact that Ipad Apps are so expensive. 2-3x's more expensive than the Iphone/Ipod version of the App. If I already bought an App for the Iphone, they should offer a discounted version for Ipad too.
Syncing between Iphone and Ipad is harder than it should be. I guess if I had paid $99 for a MobileMe subscription it would be easier. Still, I think there should be a way to connect the 2 via bluetooth, enter your Apple ID and Password, and have the 2 sync up contacts, Apps, and other information.
Despite some of these issues, so far I really like it. I feel like I'll be using Iphone anytime I'm on the move. As soon as I know i'll be at one place for a while (at home, coffee shop, waiting room, etc...) I'll be on my Ipad. |

At my local stores, the Chinese resellers were out in force. I saw them buy up everything they could to mail to countries were it is not sold yet. They brought in their kids, cousins, and grandmothers to buy the maximum limit of two per person. Screwed many of the people in line that couldn't get one after waiting for hours.
When the ipads ran out, they started buying the smart covers - cartloads at a time. It was pretty ridiculous to see old ladies who knew nothing of what they were buying furiously chatting on their cell phones with whoever was directing them.
IMHO, Apple sucks for doing this to everybody. They didn't have a reservation system so that they could get as many people in line as they could for the buzz factor. But the Japanese earthquake obliterated their plans. Serves them right.
pkang, are you not in Korea right now? |

props to the op. very informative. how much do you think these will end retailing for in korea?
as for the queues, people are clearly insane. why on earth do people have an obsession to be the first to get something. |

It improves the quality of life. As opposed to having more money, which apparently is not desirable. |

When the first iPad came out, there were 2 Arabic princes that had a contest to see who could get it first. One of them had his servant take a plane to NYC, get into a taxi, and go straight to a shopping mall in an outer borough, because it wouldn't be as crowded as the shops in Manhattan. My dad saw him. Funny stuff. I hope he won. |

I was at the mall today and there were nearly a hundred people waiting in line on the off chance that Apple would get a SECOND delivery on Saturday. Of course, there was none so they all wasted their time there. I think the resellers are getting about $200-300 per ipad, so that drives them to extremes. |

The ipads went on sale at 5:00. I went to my local Best Buy Store at 3:30 and there was about ~25 people in front of me in line.
I didn't have to wait long, and I got the model/color I wanted. These iPads are REALLY thin. Thinner than my 3GS.
Flipboard is definitely one of the coolest Apps I've seen. It makes your facebook look like a magazine.

You can flip the page like a regular magazine to get to older postings. Very sleek, very cool. |

you should check out Zite. It is a similar idea to Flipboard, but has been getting better reviews. |

It's been a few days and I am really loving this iPad. I reach for it all the tme. There is one big drawback. My iPhone screen looks super tiny and inadequate now. Before I was perfectly fine with my iPhone. Now, it just looks so small and cramped.
The iPad, although has great build quality, feels fragile. Maybe it's all the glass, or the weight, but I feel like this thing would not survive a 3 foot drop.
The whole thing is slippery and it feels like it'll slip out of my grasp at any moment.
I am disappointed at the App Store selection for the iPad. It seems must apps are $5 or above. Id say only about 30% of apps are optimized for the iPad screen. My iphone has over 50 Apps easily. My iPad has 15. I spent a long time on AppStore and most apps were too expensive or not optimized for the iPad screen. |

Is there light bleed on it? I've read that there have been several that have had it. |

I can't comment on the iPad 2, but my iPad 1 has survived plenty of falls from this height. I'm an absolute klutz and short of submerging it in water (close call with a toilet a few times), I've dropped it several times and even flung it like a frisbee when I stumbled while reading it and walking.
I use a Gelaskin, which is like a big sticker that lines it and gives it some excellent traction on both sides. Plus it removes easily and leaves no residue and looks like new beneath it. If you can find or submit a design you like, I think they're extremely worth their price.

Costs the exact same as the iPad 1 did... ie Apple has been ripping off hundreds of thousands of people for the last few months, and they line up for more. The price will be reasonable by the fourth generation or so. |
