I was indeed, they had a tutor called Nigel working with them too and all were great. It's true what you say about people devoting their full attention to it...we had a couple of people on our course who didn't stop moaning about how intensive it was, but you're warned about that beforehand and just have to suck it up. It's only a month after all!
Have you put the CELTA to much use yet? |

Even those that moan usually get through from what I've heard. There was one woman who didnt make it from our course. She was a little older and seemed incapable of taking anything new on board. That said, you never know what's going on behind the scenes. Studying like that if you have a family to look after or lots of other commitments cannot be easy!
As for me, I taught in Korean schools for two and a half years after finishing CELTA (I had already worked in Korea for a year prior to doing the course). From there I decided to do a masters. It's nothing to do with teaching or English, I just wanted the opportunity to study again! A return to Korea is probably on the cards this September.

That's probably true, i'm not sure who did and didn't get through from my course...just got an email saying that the certificates have just arrived though so maybe i'll find out tomorrow!
I haven't done any teaching yet but am planning on applying for South Korea for Feb/March 2012. So far the plan is to apply through Reach to Teach, hopefully to teach in Seoul but I hear competition is pretty tough!
I'm really interested in your experiences and any advice if you don't mind sharing...? |

This is a theme I've seen mentioned time and time again by people who have taken the CELTA. I've read a lot of people say that the trainers have a real, "my way or the highway" attitude. That alone is a turn-off. |
Totally. I absolutely detested one on my trainers, who was dogmatic to the extreme with her methods ("I have 30 years experience in teaching EFL, thus your opinions are negated").
In fact, she wouldn't even let me write 'teach' anywhere on my lesson plans, it had to be 'lead guided learning of..." instead of 'teach vocabulary', and 'guide discovery of...' instead of 'teach X or Y Grammar point'. My lessons plans plans ended up looking like bullshit marketing-speak with all the meaningless terminology which didn't serve any purpose.
And if I wanted to write any thing in the CELTA assignments that was based upon my (at that time) year's experience teaching EFL in a European junior high, she would write in red pen something akin to "YOU DID NOT STUDY/LEARN THIS DURING THE CELTA COURSE, YOU MUST SHOW MORE EVIDENCE OF LEARNING FROM THE CELTA COURSE LECTURES."
Don't get me wrong, gaining my CELTA was a good thing for my career, but the course itself (due to the main trainer) was a joke.
My fellow students who had previous EFL teaching experience detested her, while the students with zero experience in teaching thought she was god's gift to teacher training, and that her ways were the pinnacle of EFL teaching, which is how she purported them to be.
Go figure.

Whoa, sounds like you had a bloody awful experience with it! It just goes to show that even though the course is meant to be the same everywhere, the tutors you end up with make all the difference.
I doubt there's any point naming and shaming either, as I assume most tutors are freelance and will move around a lot... |
