Hi guys and gals,

My girlfriend and I are looking at jobs in Seongnam. One is located near Sujin Subway Station and the other is located near Imae Station.

Anyone know anything about these areas?

How long is the subway into central Seoul?
How long is it to Bundang?
Facilities/shops in the area? Western food, Indian restaurants?

I read on here that Sujin isn't the nicest area. Can someone confirm/deny this?

What's the area around Imae like?

Thanks a lot.

K.

Sujin = olddddddd area
Imae = Bundang area, newer much nicer area

Imae is a pretty boring area, pretty residential, but one stop away from Seohyeon station which iss one of the more popular areas to hang out in Bundang.

From Imae to Seoul (line 2) takes about 45 minutes. If you want to count the areas that are technically Seoul, then I think more like 15 minutes (Bokjeong station is the bottom of Seoul).

Sujin is on line number 8 (pink line). If you want to get to Bundang you have to transfer at the next station Moran. Sujin to Moran is probably 15 minutes including transferring. Probably not the best area.

Ok thanks.

But is there anything more you could say about Sujin?

Is it so dodgey that it's unliveable?

I'm a 32 year old guy. I like gritty and urban but wouldn't like to be looking over my shoulder every evening on the way home from work.

Ah also forgot to mention that to get into central Seoul (like near Myeongdong) you can take a bus from Seohyun station which will take about 40 minutes as long as cars aren't in the bus lane and as long as the tunnels near Namsan towers are backed up.

From Sujin it will be harder to get into central Seoul.

Even on a bad day the district is about as dangerous as your favorite suburban area in America. You wouldn't be looking over your shoulder for anything other than the double barber poles.

Old doesn't equate to dangerous or rough like it would in America.

I work at a high school in Imae. Today was a bad day, kids behaved like the rich spoiled brats that they can be in this area. I think that Suji is farther south...richer and more spoiled? Still, this isn't a bad gig. I live 2 stops from the school and the other teachers are fairly nice to me.

Sujin =/= Suji

Suji is a district in Yongin. But for the record people in Imae are probably richer than the people in Suji.

Thanks very much for the info guys.

To confirm, it's Sujin that I'm enquiring about. Near Moran Station in Seongnam.

Just one more question. Is it true that there's a dog market in the area of Moran/Sujin stations?

That's one thing I couldn't handle being near to. Brothels, red light district etc I could get over, but a dog market I couldn't.

Any more input from people in or near Sujin and Imae areas would be great. Thanks very much.

Yeah Moran does indeed have that. But I used to live in that area and never once saw it. You have to venture into the area, which you probably won't do on accident.

I think there are other threads on this topic:

Hey again Slowmotion.

Yeah, googled the forums on here for info. The little bit I got on Sujin was by doing that. So whatever info there is, I have it covered. Looking for new stuff to gain a better insight.

Thanks for your help.

I note your Irish? You can't have been to Korea before as it's just not the same as Ireland or England. You won't ever be looking over your shoulder on the way home from work mate, don't worry about that.

Proximity to Seohyeon is definately a bonus if you are considering spending a lot of time out. There is a western bar there as well as many other exciting little nightclubs/pool/darts/movies/restaurants, etc.

From Sujin To Seohyeon will take you about 20 minutes by train, and fro Sujin to Imae... uh.. 17 minutes?

http://www.seoulmetro.co.kr/station/eng/linemap.action is a great resource and will help you calculate time and distance.

However take into account that when you are that far outside of central Seoul it is often easier (and faster) to just take a bus into central seoul.

The western bar I speak of is: http://www.facebook.com/travelersbar and is typically filled with foreigners.

There is also a great nightclub called Last Angel in the Seohyeon neighbourhood, that I admit was responsible (aside from the company) for one of the best New Years Eve's of my life.
