Are you JOKING??? Seriously, THIS is why N. America is in the middle of an obesity crisis, people just don't cook at home anymore! "Oh I'm too busy"....really? Too busy to make a salad and grill some chicken? Too busy to sautee some veggies and boil some water for rice? Too busy to make pasta and toss some garlic, onions, tomatoes and basil in the pot? Too busy for BASIC LIFE SKILLS?
Or, and this is my PERSONAL favourite...."I just can't cook! Ha ha ha!" So, you're ILLITERATE? You can't read a recipe and follow basic instructions? Pathetic. I have no patience for this kind of laziness, but even worse is to assume that just because you are too useless to learn a few basic skills to better your own health you state that the rest of the world is just as helpless.
In Korea, NOT in a major city, I make, on a regular basis:
Various kinds of pasta sauce
Bread
All manner of salads
Stews/Soups/Chowders
Chili
Perogies
Quiche/egg-based dishes
Smoothies
Tacos/Fajitas
Pizza (homemade dough)
I love to cook, and despite your ignorant assertion that 'most people can't make good food at home' I am a DAMN GOOD cook. |
This should not turn into a im so great blah blah blah rant, and N. Americans are fat fat fat rant. This is not the reason we are overweight. Personally I love cheesesteaks more than life itself sometimes but I'm actually underweight.
And no matter how good of a cook you are, you will NEVER replicate Pats or Jim's steaks in Philly. They are terrible for you but very possibly the best thing I've ever tasted.
So you make pizza? Id put a wager on it doesnt beat brick oven NY style. You make Chowders eh, Id put a wager that a thick New England fresh chowder beats the crap out of what you make. And I was actually a paid cook but I dont have a brick over to cook my hand made pizza dough in.
I guess for missing that unique taste Im just another fat N. American with no skills in the kitchen |

I can vouch for her cooking skills. She makes the best pasta bake you'll ever eat. Her fajitas aren't too shabby either. |

Please don't treat me like an idiot. I understood the point perfectly well. I was just stating that she is.

So glad that place got shut down. Waaaay over-priced, and one of the worst rip-offs in Korea. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw him put one of those Kraft-singles cheese slices in it. |
Jacoby's is an even bigger ripoff. 3500 won for a side of fries? To hell with that place. |
Another place I hate is Krazee Burger. I remember that was also a rip-off. Expensive second-rate fast food burger and the meal didn't even include fries... if I remember correctly. |

Nice rant there.
I wasn't aware that most had the same meaning as all. Learn something new every day.

What's not to get? Some chef in another country makes something that someone else won't be able to replicate to a similar standard? I'd say that that's totally false if one a) is capable in the kitchen in the slightest and b) one has access to the same utensils, facilities (a pizza oven, etc.), and ingredients. |

Similar is not the same. I am a fine cook myself but there are just somethings in this life that can't be replicated out of your Korean kitchen. I am sure if you had the same facilities, ingredients and training as the kitchen staffs do in the famous food establishments do, you could replicate the EXACT same thing. But you don't and you're not. You can make a reasonable copy, maybe even one that is better but its just not the same. |

Are you being serious? This is one of the most absolutely inane statements I have ever heard. So, Ill break it down a bit for you.
Why cant you get a proper bagel in L.A? Because the water has different qualities. So...go a head an make a perfect bagel for me by importing the water, replicating a 10k dollar over etc.
Why are cheese steaks not the same anywhere outside philly? Because the rolls are different everywhere else. Also, the grill the good places use have built up flavor on them.
Yeah, I can make wonderful pasta sauces etc. but live in Rome for a year (as I did) and tell me you can get the same quality mozzarella.
This shouldnt turn into an argument but Im tired of people calling people fat lazy for not cooking all the time. It a stupid point to make. And the fattest person I ever met in Korea was a professional cook in the west for 15 years : ) |

Anyway, enough of this pointless nonsense.
The fact of the matter is that a crappy bar and grill that served crappy Philly style cheesesteaks is closed and more than likely no one will miss it.
I've noticed that if I visit a western-style restaurant and the customers are all Korean, then it's a pretty good indication that you will be paying a lot for crappy food. Case in point: Jacoby's, Smokey Saloon and that crappy Thai place by The Flying Pan. |

This is pretty true.
Just like when one of my favorite mexican prices jacked up all the prices and the food quality got worse, then many Koreans started going. When it was greatness not that many customers. |

So let me get this straight...
higher prices + water down food = lots of Koreans will start flocking to the restaurant.
I kinda believe its somewhat true. I don't think the quality has gone down...just made it for Koreans. Although... Taco Rico in Gangnam.. quality has definitely gone down there. |

I actually liked Jacoby's originally, before I suppose some Koreans blogged about it with cutesy little photos and V signs everywhere and the customer base turned predominantly Korean.
It was more a matter of convenience than anything else, but I'd hit the place up once a month or so. Now it's just too oppressive between the crowds, zoned out/onery staff (depending on the day), and smoking ban to even bother for a drink and platter of wings. And watching a quartet dismantle one of those ridiculous tower burgers or whatever like it's a taco salad...what's the point of serving it as a burger? Not to mention even the basic burger is stupidly huge - not in a good way - if you don't get some stuff taken off. Anyway...
One thing is certain, however. The interior of Jacoby's is fugly. |

Taco Rico was the exact place I was talking about. and raising their quesadillas from 6,500 to 9,000 is bad enough, but including it with a carrot on top now is just an insult. |
