Please help!!!

I have been offered a job and the contract doesnt state anything about the pension. When I asked about it they told me that

"its a market practice not to have the teacher enrolled in the program. Due to lack of a treaty between Korea and the UK, when the teacher leaves Korea there is no refund procedure for the UK citizen to be able to claim the refund of the premium".

Is this normal?

Thanks

Technically they have no choice but to enrol you, even though you won't be able to claim the refund.

It may sound attractive to not pay it, but beware. As far as I know the pension goes hand in hand with health insurance.

I would be a little concerned because it is definitely not market practice - all public schools deduct it automatically regardless of nationality, and every private teacher i know also has it deducted - even though we cant claim it back which is very irritating.
however if everything else checks out i would just count your blessings - its a surprisingly large amount of money that essential just gets stolen unless you plan on retiring in korea on your tiny tiny contributions you make living here

thank you both. I have asked again about the pension to my recruiter, but I still have no reply. He is trying to sort it out with the school.

If I am told not to bother with the pension, but I still have the health is that legal?

If they cheat their own government and call it standard practices, what do you think their standard practices are for their teachers?

Change recruiters, move on and keep looking.

You can't have one without the other.

If you don't have pension you won't have NHIC medical either in spite of what the contract says or your employer tells you. If you don't get the NHIC booklet you don't have coverage.

Live without or move on. Pick one.

How long will it be before Korea signs a reciprocal treaty with the UK?

Bearing in mind that thousands of Koreans are resident in UK.
