This was posted on the related thread, but there's too much babble going on between multiple parties over there.

This also caused a stir, and sheds some light on the things that people are arguing about, i.e. do minorities hang better together, whose world is it and who continues to make it that way, etc.

There is a reason so many of us root against Duke.

I root against Duke. But not because of anything Rose says. Grant Hill responded well to what Rose said and Rose doesn't seem to have a clear idea about what an Uncle Tom is. How many games did Duke have to vacate from that era? How many wins did UM and the Fab Five have to vacate? I guess recruiting only "certain types of players" paid off well for Duke. I'm from Michigan and am a Wolverine fan, but Rose is wrong and making himself look foolish. Kudos to Hill for his intelligent, measured response.

And what reason would that be, at least in regards to Rose's comments(serious question)?

Also, did you catch Grant Hill's response?

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=6224395

Although Rose does state that that was how he felt then, at age 17, he does not really make it clear how he feels now, at least to Hill's satisfaction.

Sorry, I should clarify. I don't agree with everything Rose said and I think that Duke has changed in the 15 years since there was a Fab Five, but I think his comments had some validity.

Top 10 reasons
I don't agree with the entire list, but I do with the majority of them.

And a blog entry that articulates the general hatred towards Duke better than I can right now

Ok, fair enough. You have to admit though that most of the reasons on that list and mentioned in the blog are very common sentiments toward any successful program, i.e. they get preferential treatment and they think they are better than us because they are rich kids. Just typical sports fan rivalry stuff, which, after all, is not life or death.

Rose escalated it beyond the typical stuff though when he used the term "Uncle Tom". That was why I asked the question.

And all this Duke stuff is indicative of the structure of American society in general, and how minorities feel about their prospects vs how the elite are only too happy to keep things rollin' exclusively their way.

Agreed, and in that sense I can appreciate that Rose was giving an honest assessment of his true feelings of that time in his life - when he was much younger. Hopefully, we all gain wisdom with age. I would certainly like to think I am wiser than I was at age 17.

Understand. He would have been more effective in his message if he hadn't used that term.

Yes duke does recruit a certain type of player!! Good at basketball and good in the classroom.

This sounds like Rose is talking off the top of his head and the Uncle Tom comment is something he remembers a coach or teammate using to fire the team up. The talking heads want to use this to point out that black males who are successful in the class room are often derided in their own community. I think he was making a point that 17 year olds are often immature and have some half baked ideas.

Using the words of a basketball jock to extrapolate an analysis of American society ???

Even a blunt or mislaid comment can speak volumes about a society or institution. Sometimes they are more revealing in their frank directness than a dissertation. Witness the UCLA girl.

Yeah, I do not have empirical evidence, but the words of a 17 year old basketball jock from the inner city were probably pretty representative of the thinking of that demographic of American society.

Birds of a feather, always flock together. People who are from the same socio-economic background, educational background and race will always remain in those same groups.

Who wrote, "The races weren't meant to mix"? I'm paraphrasing here, but don't we see a lot of that in Canada and America? North America has fairly large enclaves of cultural pockets forming - Chinese, Korean, Black, Latin American - that are separate from the host culture. They have created their own cities.

There's no denying that, but the question is why? Is it by choice, or because they have little choice, for one reason or another?

Or is it just a case of being hard to break out of one's "comfort zone", for lack of a better term?
