Don't feel bad, Backrow. I wouldn't feel the least bit guilty about the airfare if they would have changed everything like that. Plus, with all the crap that you have to do to get the visa, you more than paid for that plane ticket. I've known 2 people that have done runs and they never paid back their airfare. They were also screwed by their employers pretty bad, so they never felt any guilt about it.

Yeah, because your employer MADE you go through all those visa issues, you have the right to rip him off. Brilliant bit of self-justification there. It's like there's a bunch of self-indulgent children in these forums.

One time a taxi driver stole my cellphone, so I robbed a middle school boy of his. I figure, they're both Korean, so we're even right?

Another time the lunch at school was terrible, so i went to a galbi restaurant and then ran away without paying.

It all evens out!

Does everyone understand why people do midnight runs now? Let's just dispense with the whole Korea thing for a moment. Wouldn't many Western employers do the same thing in the same circumstances?

I understand why people do midnight runs, 90% (yes, from my educated derriere) of the time it's because of cowardice. The runner is simply afraid to confront their employer or their own feelings. It's running away, plain and simple. The more NETs stand up for themselves, the better things will get for everyone involved. Don't move halfway around the world if you can't stand up for yourself.

You sound like me, five years ago.

But the courts won't back you up because you won't be there any longer.

Until the NETs in Korea form a real union (ha!), midnight runs will continue to happen.

OP. Can you not at the very least see out your notice period? You can get out after 4 weeks if you were to tell a little white lie and say you are going home because a close relative or friend is very sick. Then you can get your deposit back, you will get paid everything due you for time worked, although you will have to pay them back for the flight.

You haven't really given us any reason to be sympathetic towards your plight. Maybe there is a good reason you need to leave ASAP, but if it is just culture shock and / or you are not a good fit for teaching (and assuming you aren't about to suffer some kind of psychotic break and fling yourself off your apartment building) then I have to say just suck it up.

I'm most sympathetic with midnight runners at hogwons. Less so at PS jobs. At public schools you at least have an organization that can help you. However, their (EPIC/GEPIC/SMOE) job is mainly on contractual matters and if you have a onerous co-teacher and/or satanic vice principal, its not so much a contractual issue as it as a relationship issue. Even then sometimes a release can be negotiated and either another school (unlikely but it happens) or hogwon-dom awaits you.
The whole range of almost entirely the school's fault to almost entirely the NET's fault happens.
It truly is a case by case basis. What is reasonable is very subjective. Contractually, if its broken, then there is a case for grievance.
I've known friends that do runners, one of whom worked for Wonderland and I dare a poster here who will defend a runner from that chain. I've also seen some spoiled people who want to run that I would regard as trivial and I expect most would.
From the little I gather it doesn't really matter if the OP's reasons are valid. It appears they have reached a point of no return mentally and emotionally. Even if its not valid, a midright run is advisable over notice in my humble opinion. You really don't know what schools will do. Seemingly fair minded schools sometimes morph into vindictive b*tchiness when you decide to break a contraact. I've hearg of enough stories to advise not chancing it. I'm not the one that has to deal with the possible ramifications and its easy to sit here and tell a person on a forum to do something that I may not be able to handle myself.

Generally speaking...Run Forrest Run!
