What? You can negotiate your salary?

Hard to say since you provide next to no information!

What are your qualifications?

What experience do you have?

Where do you want to work (Hakwon, PS...)

What else do you bring to the table?

Depending on where you work (ex: Hakwon) how good of a negociator are you?

My guess is, after 2~3 months in Korea, you will be at the airport headed back to your home county. Therefore, you can make about 2 months salary. That should be enough to pay for your plane ticket.

Are you sure you wish to travel abroad and work in a different country?

You seem (sorry if that offends you) pretty darn naive and inexperienced. Still, I suppose we all had to start somewhere so here goes:

You can negociate your salary if you have LEVERAGE. From your post, you seem to be a newbie with no experience and non-education related qualifications. That means you have zero leverage so neogicating conditions with a Hakwon (you cannot negociate with a PS as contracts are standardazied) will be hard. The negociation point was linked to the 2nd and 3rd year part of your wide open and under-informed question.

Good luck.

Just to clarify:

Tax evasion is illegal. It involves using illegal means to lower your net taxes paid.

Tax avoidance is legal. It involves using legal means to lower your tax bill - things like deductions for dependents, deductions for mortgage interest and other legal items available that allow you to legally reduce your tax bill. When you plan and choose to buy a house and borrow and deduct the interest payment you are using tax avoidance.

Sure, but to go a little bit further. Who is to say what is avoidance and what is evasion. In Kuwait neither exist because there is no income tax or sales tax. In North Korea everything is tax. Everything you make is for the state. What if you are an American and don't like your tax dollars being spent on child-killing drones? Wouldn't is then be your moral duty to withhold those funds? Being from Canada, I don't like to pay taxes because my money ends up in the pockets of lazy welfare scum, overpaid civil servants and useless government programs.

I think Korea is better with what they do with taxes. They seem to be able to create remarkable things with relatively low percentages. However I think if I walked into my local tax office and declared that I make about 3,000,000won a month on privates and then asked how I can pay taxes on this, I would be shipped off for mental evaluation PDQ. Actually, for life insurance purposes, I wish I could officially record my income. But I can't. I'm certainly not going to ask mothers to sign receipts.

Exactly. What do you bring to the negotiation? Many need to ask themselves this question.

Over your first year, plan on banking about a grand (USD) a month. Anything more is gravy. Subtract from that any loan or debt payments, of course. Even back in the early 90s, most people I knew here were paying off their loans, taking a big trip on the way back to N. American, and leaving with about 10K after just two years or so.

Nice! I know the money is out there, but one must be at least a little on the creative and lucky side to make a million won a day. Anyways, nice going!
