I really like this word, but I stopped using it when I was about 16 because my little brother mocked me for using it. I didn't even realise that 'thrice' was any weirder to use than 'twice', for example, until my little brother put the lead in my balloon =(
Anyway, it's a word I only say ironically now, which is sad. It's both utilitarian and sounds nice.
What words do you wish you could say, but would get slapped if you did? |

Thrice is a great word, and I regularly use words such as (but not limited to) loquacious, garrulous, whilst, gambol, ineffable, etc.
Just because a word has disappeared from current/contemporary lexicons it doesn't mean it's not an acceptable word in the proper context, which is surprisingly frequent enough. |

indubitably
'due to' - the dumbing down of the English language has caused those in printed and video media to substitute the word 'because' in it's place. As a result, many times there are instances where it is used incorrectly. One of my big irks.
irk - see above!
fortnight - I only here this when watching sport tournaments originating from Europe and by a certain American sportscaster who will remain nameless. |

Quote from Kill Bill
The amount of venom that can be delivered from a single bite can be gargantuan. You know, I've always liked that word... "gargantuan"... so rarely have an opportunity to use it in a sentence.

"Utilitarian"? As a philosophy major I had my share of strange faces when I used that one. "Useful" is the less high-falutin' word.

"Beverage". I have been chastized at least four times in my life for using that word. Apparently it's only to be used by wait staff in a restaurant (I've been told as much) and that it "sounds funny" used otherwise. I know some Brits and Kiwis who use the term, but back home in Canada it's just too formal/restaurant specific. "Drink" is the accepted alternative. |

Defenestrate - It just rolls of the tongue. I wish I had more opportunities to both use the word and perform the action. |

I'm glad to say that I only use "utilitarian" when it's appropriate. I'm pretty sure you meant useful. If your little brother were here, I'm sure he'd mock you for that as well. |

thusly
Usage note
Some speakers and writers regard thusly as a pointless synonym for thus, and they avoid it or use it only for humorous effect. |
