Someone from the US is visiting me here in the ROK and she's trying to get her phone to work. Will it work on the local networks with a new chip or whatever or is she stuck using WiFi?

Just visiting? Then no, it won't work.

Unfortunately, your friend will not be able to get local phone service, but not because she's just visiting.

The Samsung Mesmerize is a CDMA phone, so it will only be able to roam here. So she can use her phone, and it will retain her US number, but her incoming and outgoing calls will be expensive.

For future reference, anyone with an unlocked WCDMA phone can go to a KT Global Store with a passport and get registered for prepaid service.

You can read details on how to do this here: http://expatblog.kt.com/42

Drop me a line on KT's official twitter : @olleh_expats if you have any more questions!

Another post where I didn't do my homework. I should have checked to see if it was a cdma phone. Thanks chris.
