I got my phone awhile back. Since the first day I've had my phone, I've been getting calls from people I don't know. Apparently they still think that it's their friend/co-worker's/psychiatrist's/mistresses' number because they keep calling me.

It usually goes like: "yubuseyo?" "wrong number" yubuseyo?!" "wrong number" "YUBUSEYO?!?" *I try to explain in broken Korean* "Ah... yubuseyo?!"

A couple of times I've had my co-worker talk to them and tell them not to call anymore but they still call! The same freaking numbers that my co-worker spoke too. They always call and start talking at full speed the second I pick up.

Has anyone else had this before?

There should be a way to block calls from certain numbers. Pretty much any mobile phone made in the past 10 years has this function. If it's a landline call the phone company (or ask your coworker to do it) and ask them to block the number(s).

If it's really a big problem and the calls are coming from many different numbers (too many to block) you could always change your phone number. There's usually no charge for this, especially if you explain to them that you're being harassed.

Some of the non-smartphones have the ability to add the number to a block list. Worst case scenario is to assign each of the numbers that keep calling a "Silent ringtone" that way even if they do call you won't hear it.

It's always fun to pay the 'yoboseyo" game. Try to see how many yobesayo's you can get out of the caller. You've answered the phone in English, and said in stumbled Korean that they've got the wrong number. The yoboseyo's continue, as they're convinced they've called the right number. You can't possible be where you think you are. My best record is getting eight yoboseyos out of a caller, but I've heard of others getting twelve or thirteen. Bloody brilliant. And the wonderful thing is that the caller will eventually hang up in utter confusion and (ready for this?) ....hit redial. Very Happy

My advice is this: soak this wrong number thing for all the laughter you can get out of it. Without the ability to laugh at things in this country you're doomed.

I knew there was a thread on this topic somewhere. Found it. It's a fun read. http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=5488&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Enjoy.

Lately I've been having the same number call me over and over again. I was in class and I could feel my phone vibrating for the better part of 15 minutes so I ignored it. I called them on my break, told them that it was a wrong number (in broken Korean) and the today they did it again. They call over and over again until I answer and then yell a bunch of stuff in Korean to which I try to answer in Korean only to recieve "yubuseyo?"

It's quite aggravating. I'm trying to block the numbers but I don't think my Galaxy has that feature.

Once, I got a text message in hangul that I knew wasn't spam. So I asked my wife what it said, she gave me this funny look and said..."whoever it is wants a divorce".

Of course that prompted me to say, "Oh $**t, I hope she doesn't want much alimony".

If it's a chick then hook up. If it's not then ask if they know any.

I know a Korean who had the same problem. They must turn over the numbers pretty quick so don't pay your bill late Smile

Hahahaha... I love it. Just after I first read the OP's post, I got the exact same thing. I told her it was a wrong number, and after the third "yobosayo", I started repeating it with the exact same intonation. Finally, I said "noogoo yaeyo?" got something muttered back in Korean, then she hung up. 20 seconds later she rang back. It's just so bizarre that they think saying "yobosayo" 10 times will magically turn you into the person they want to speak to. For the record, I've had my number for over 3 years!

This happens to me all the time. Ive had my phone for almost 2 years and I still get calls from Gyeongi-do a few times a month. I find the callbacks especially infuriating so I've started to return the favour.

After the 4th or 5th yoboseyo I start to swear at them in Korean.

If they don't get 'hangul mal mutaeyo' or 'waegookin' after the first five 'yobosayos' then they deserve a shibseki.
