Anyone know of any gyms in which the dumbbells go beyond 110 pounds? I am willing to travel after work so distance isn't too much of a concern if it is located in the greater Seoul area. I am just outside of Seoul. At this point it is more than a hobby and the amount of time I spend at it these days warrants the use of better facilities. My dumbbells are up to 40 kgs which leaves me very reliant on barbbells, which I am not a big fan of.

Any facility more on par with western standards would be great.

Maybe Yongsan or Gangnam?

Yeah, not a lot of Korean gyms keep heavy heavy weight. Just the reality of the general size and strength of the locals.

However, there are a few bodybuilding gyms around the Gangnam area. If they don't have the heavy stuff there, I'm not sure where it would be. But I think your best best is there. Most of the pro Korean bodybuilders workout in the gyms around there so I'm sure they will be better stocked with more weight and more machines.

Most gyms in Korea are a sad state anyways. I wish there were more western style gyms, alas.

Finding heavy dumb bells in Korea is difficult. I've never seen dumb bells over 40kg in Korea. I think you'd have to go to a specialized "weight training" place rather then a "fitness center".

If you find one I'd be interested in hearing where it's located as well.

Where I work out they have dumbbells to 110 lbs. I don't use them; I just get to put them back after the adjummas roll them out to clean.

There must be other places and as posted above Gangnam is probably your best bet.

My advice: Be careful girl!
Korean men won't like you if you get too big. They prefer slim women rather than muscular gals.

I get tired of saying this over and over but it's necessary: There's no exercise a woman (or man, but especially women) can do to make herself look better than lifting weights.

You will not get ripped like those women that you see on the cover of muscle magazines unless you:

1. Have the right genetics (you don't)
2. Eat 300 calories a day (you don't)
3. Work out for 4 hours 5 times a week (you don't)
4. Inject steroids (you don't)

The worst thing that will happen is you will lose fat, tone your body and look more like THIS than this.

So lift those damn weights. And let all the skinny-fat girls claim that you're going to bulk up. In the meantime, you'll be out shopping for smaller jeans with the money you got from your raise that you got since you look so good.

Exactly.

"Oh...be careful, you don't want to bulk up."

It's total nonsense.

Hilary Swank had to consume something like 5,000 calories a day to build muscle for her role in "Million Dollar Baby."

So you don't have the answer either?

I don't live in Seoul. The only place I've heard people talk about in Korea that has heavy stuff is a gym called Speed and Power. I've seen threads like this over and over. People have stated Speed and Power has stuff like tires, kettlebells, sledge hammers, etc...

I've done this with a guy on here before who told me not to respond. Don't put your opinions out there (My dumbbells are up to 40 kgs which leaves me very reliant on barbbells, which I am not a big fan of) if you don't want people to ask questions.

Use barbells when heavy dumbells aren't available.

Happy now? I answered your question.

If you need a dumbell (one hand, right?) that weighs more than 50kg, perhaps you should consider something in the agricultural field. Laughing
