I don't know why you guys think this guy is a troll. He's just a newbie asking some questions. I remember how clueless I was before coming to Korea.
Anyways, OP, Korea can change you for better or for worse, depends on what happens. But my time here has definitely made me into a much better person. I wouldn't change anything, coming here has been the best thing I've ever done...
But yeah, for those souls teaching 5 year old kids in hakwons, I cannot speak for them, but hopefully you get a position you like and do work you find satisfying. I survived the 5 year old kid thing for a while, I'd never go back, but it's "not that bad" for a year or so... then you gotta move on to stay happy! |

I like your attitude, brento!
It's perfectly normal to have a lot of questions before coming to Korea... even if a lot of the information can be found online, it's always nicer to talk/message to real people... unless those people are certain posters on Dave's ESL Cafe. |

He's a troll because he's asking questions that can be answered by either looking through the FAQs or searching Google. I've also noticed that he never posts in the other forums on this board, like the General Discussion forum. I think he's pretending to be a newbie teacher because he's eventually going to advertise something/spam the board by giving false testimonials. |

| There is absolutely a lack of respect for foreign teachers in Korea. Before coming to Korea, I thought that Asian kids were disciplined and respected their teachers. Boy, was that incorrect!! Many of you don't speak Korean. If you only knew how much bad language they were using right in front of you. |

you have to make the korean teachers to respect you. when kids see that, they'll respect you more than korean teachers. |

The kids will respect you if they see you as a teacher, or if they see that you are a good, responsible person. But setting a good example is actually harder than you might think--especially if you expect the same from children that you do from adults or do things 'just because you want to see their adorable little smiles'.
If you do set a good example and they don't respect you, then the problem is theirs, not yours. |

Good and bad.
The good. I learned I can respect children.
And here's the bad. I learned not to trust Korean public education officials (teachers, co-teachers, school adminstrators like vice principals, principals, etc). They're robber barons in a gerantocracy hierarchy. They can backstab anyone whether if you're a gyopo or not. |
